Questions to ask to get a read?

What are some tactics that you use to get a read on ppl in live games? I understand that the reads are also based on past performance nad tanble image, but you alwasy hear pro's asking for a chip count, or 'should i call?'. Are there some questions that you have used that seem to work?

Thanks

  • Generall you can as someone whatever the hell you want as long as you think they'll respond. I think its more important to listen to how they answer instead of what they answer.
  • Who's turn is it?
in 4 or under table is a good question when it is your turn.

    Did you just bet that?
After a raise and you are at least one away.

    John - "Raise $50"
    Bill - "Call."
You - "John, you raised that?"
You - "All in" or "fold"

I agree with zero. Most of the time the answer is irrelevant but by watching how they answer you can tell alot about a player.
  • Body language is a far better predictor of strength, watch players when they are in a meaningless hand. Note how they look, talk and act. Look for the changes that occur when they have a lot of chips in the middle and try to determine what it means. You really need to be able to become confortable staring with some intensity at your opponents, this in itself can usually ilicit a reaction that will let you know how comfortable/confident the player is at that time.

For my own play, when playing well I watch almost every hand. I'll try to predict what each player will fold, call or raise with in the respective positions even when Im not in the hand. Use that information with the body language tells and it should help you out.

  • well done shannon, I do the same. To bad at the last bristol you didn't actually believe I had a hand..... you took me to the river and rivered me..... I knew it and I paid to see it......
  • It's funny actually because I had to of known you had me beat on a board of As 5d 8c 2s when I'm holding 67s but when I said to you on the turn "I don't believe you Joe" as you were continuing your bets it was to set up the river card in case I hit. I think I remember you talking to yourself after the 9s came down on the river and being raised by me and saying something along the lines of "you could have the straight, or could have runner runner flushed me. Although you did say you didn't believe me so...." I think this last line convinced you to pay me off. I always find when I say something outloud, especially something I want to hear and want to believe it makes it that much more real and convinces me to make that action.

Something I continue to think about and really need to start making notes on is the influence of what you say and how you say things at the table. How the words you use can affect the outcome of someones action. Does something as subtle as "I'll put you all in" rather than "I'm all in" have an affect the apparent strength of the hand in the person saying it?

    Just some thoughts....
