I was wonderin if anyone could recomend a good book on learning omaha and stud games. I havent played either and would like too when the member tourneys go that way.
IMO, Todd Brunson's Stud8 chapter in Super System 2 is the best way to learn how to play split pot poker. The chapter deals directly witrh Stud8, but many of the ideas can be carried over to Omaha8.
It's actually hard to find a lot on Stud & Omaha.
Seven-Card Stud for Advanced players is okay. Bob Ciaffone's Omaha book is okay, but dissappointingly brief. Ray Zee's book FAP on Omaha8/Stud8 is okay. Oddly (or perhaps not so oddly given its popularity) there is no Omaha (Hi) FAP. Dave Scharf's "Winning at Poker" contains a very short section on basic Stud (Hi) which is worth reading.
There is also a lot of good information about Omaha (primarily Omaha8) on this site:
I've been trying to learn some new games as well, and have set my sites on these two. I'm finding I am learning quickly by reading, and then heading right over to some play money games. The players are generally really bad in those games, so the hands reading stuff takes a hit, but you can definitely apply the things you are learning, and up the curve a bit.
I play almost every Wed in one of the softest stud8/O8 games ever put on this planet. If anyone ever wants to tag along, these guys don't mind if someone watches another player's hand (if they're not in the game) with the intent on learning the game and maybe sitting one day.
