Why you should never start a $3-$6 hand with $16.50

I often recommend (and take myself) unusually high buy-ins in limit holdem games. One reason is that I never ever ever ever want this to happen. Ever.

(This idea is even more important if you are playing in a game with uncapped heads-up betting.)

  • Sometimes one of the criteria that I use in table selection is 1-2 fairly short stacks.

Players who aren't sitting with at least 12-15bb tend to have less of a clue as to what they are doing, or they are steaming off the remainder of their stack.

I find this especially true at the 5 10 6max tables on Party.

    AND, ouch.
  • I don't know. I'll bet the quad 10s was pretty happy about it.

I've observed and implemented the same thing, always atleast1-2 shorty's.

    stp
  • On party this isn't as good because the deafult buy-in is 25BB so most people have that. On other servers like Stars for example I agree this is actually a good criteria for table selection.
  • JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJACKPOT!

    oh, it's not party..
  • Imagine if you had the quad 10s on a Party Bad Beat table and the KJ guy did not have enough to make the pot $20 for it to be a raked hand. While your hand would technically qualify for the jackpot, you would not get it because the pot was not big enough (as the hand has to be raked).

That would be a serious bad beat :P

I have never seen a hand as extreme as the above though I have seen some people win with AA on their last $1-2 and watch the hand go nuts where they would have won a $70-100 pot instead of the $8-10 main pot. They usually dump their money soon after.
  • Quads vs. straight flush would have gone and gone and gone and gone in uncapped heads-up betting.  Too bad for groth.

Not to take this into the "advertising" world, but... Full Tilt, huh?  Interesting.  I never suspected it.

What's the action like... limit games $15/$30 and up, MTT's and SNG's $100 and up...

Or I could just download the software and see for myself.  Nah... too easy.

I have no idea, but according to

    http://www.bonuswhores.com/full-tilt-poker.php

there is not much action at $15-$30 and above. As of right now, only three $100 SNG's are running, so not much there either.

  • Not much higher action in ring and none in higher limit sngs.
  • I like reading the tells from the player avatar emotions on Full Tilt.
