A 10 is it playable and from where?

So many ppl over play any ace. I have really been focusing on how loose my play is and folding alot of hands that i used to play. The results have been great. Just wonderin if i should play A10 or is this considered a rag hand? and in what situations it would be a good play? I have even been foldin hands like AJ and AQ which i used to way overvalue.

  • It depends on so many factors that I can't answer...it can be a raising hand, a calling hand or a folding hand depending on position, players, game (limit vs NL), action, #players, table, etc,etc...you can't value a hand on the cards alone
  • Are you talking pre-flop? There are situations i can think of to fold AQ, AJ and AT...if a tight player in early position has gone all in and there is plenty of time left in a tourney..i'll drop those hands...but overall, in my opinion, you want to see a flop with these hands. Now i'm not really in a position to be giving advice on poker..i'm very much still building my game and strategy, but i'm interested in when you are folding these hands?
    Poker is very situational.....
  • These hands are very playable. The key is to not over-value them. Your question is not specific enough to give a more specific answer.
  • I would have to agree with hork. I think A10 is a playable hand just as long as you don't over value it, and especially out of position. It all depends on the type of table that you are playing at, if it's loose or tight. Myself I will usually try to limp with A10 in EP and MP and maybe stick in a raise to an unraised pot from LP & especially the button.
  • In general, in a limit ring game, I tend to fold it in EP (I may limp if it's suited). I'll probably open raise it from MP or LP. If someone's already limped it'll depend on the player. If they're loose, I'll raise, tight I might fold. And it's not a hand I'm cold-calling a raise with (unless maybe it's suited and there's a bunch of people already in the pot. Then again, I'm apt to 3-bet it vs. a LAG or an obvious steal attempt as well. So, in a nutshell...it depends... :)
  • sorry for not being more specific. I understand that just about any hand is playabe depending on positon and other factors. I was more interested in the fact of if this is unsuited is A10 considered an ace rag hand or no? And to answer the question about when am i folding AQ and AJ is more in no limit when there is a large ep raise and usually another caller. I as of late especially in tourneys have been tryin not to overvalue these hands. I will raise if my position calls for it along with the other factors.
  • As already mentioned, It's playable, but you can't fall in love with it if your facing pressure and you don't get any help.
  • There are many factor's to consider.
Example: Playing NL 1/2 and a tight player opens under the gun opens for a raise, what I consider a medium sized raise, I am in the button holding A10 S...with this hand I am looking for three things...two pair...straight/flush draw and the reaction bet from the raiser...he leads out 40, 4 callers from his orginal preflop raise which is about 85% of the pot...one caller two others fold and the action is back to me(I checked the flop) Flop is A, 10, 7...I reraise the 40 to 140, figuring orginal bettor spiked the A with a face card and I had to take it down there, incase the other caller was on a draw...everyone folds and I take the pot...however without the two pair or draw...I might have to let it go to his orginal raise...
  • In terms of hand rankings ATo is 30'th and ATs is 10'th according to the folks from the University of Alberta (poki poker). Slansky has ATs at number 15 and AT at number 37.

The problem with AT is that any better ace AJ, AQ, AK is allot better. Harrington describes this as an exponential curve. The cutoff is the Jack, as AT isn't allot better than A9 down to A2 (and Beanie would believe A9 dominates!) -- these end up splitting many pots -- as much as 10% of pots are split.

That being said, you have a decent hand in AT -- but I wouldn't go looking to hit two pair to take someone's stack. I'm more thinking I'd like to play it if I believe I have the best ace. The later you get in position, the easier it is to determine if you have the best ace. So, when I play this, I'm playing from Middle position onwards and I'm generally raising pre-flop because I think I have the best hand.

Tred carefully, as it can get you into lots of trouble as it is a marginal hand, even if you have it ranked as high as number 15.

Yes, but it's only dominating for me. I've seen other people try to play it, and it doesn't work quite so well for them :) . I also play it VERY cautiously online, since my reputation doesn't matter much there (nobody knows my favorite hand) and my "EIO" is fairly low - live is special (and against Mark is even better :) )!

I agree with Lou that better A's are a LOT better, although I wonder about the cutoff around the J. Personally, I treat AJs as a fairly strong A, but AJo isn't much better IMO than A6o.

There's a 5% equity edge with AJo over A6o against 9 random hands, which is pretty significant. You're also going to end up dominated WAY more often with A6o in any loose game. A7-AT are very common holdings at loose tables.
  • I have had sooo many bad beats on A 10.
I usually fold it just because of that.
