private poker Rooms in Canada

Hi I was wondering if poker rooms that are being opened in Canada are illegal. In my city there are like 6 now from games that just offer limit poker to 1-2 pot limit and big tournaments... My friend said that it was on the news that it is but its not cause its a private club and everything is from donations. There was a law where they where not allowed to serve alcohol with a game of chance... Do these poker rooms have a license. I'm feeling like I can't go to these places anymore....

It is not like it used to be, I"ve played BJ, Craps and poker for over 20 years in and around the Toronto area. The Law Enforcement now seems to have bigger worries (normally young men who like to shoot each other and anyone else who gets in the way). It used to be a concern for me but I've been to quite a few poker rooms and have no worries.

Sir, if you do not know the legalities regarding this issue I can only imagine how much else there is that you do not know about running a club.
How about the basics? Do you know all the rules of the game? I don't mean which hand beats what. More sticky situations like when the dealer misdeals, a player purposely exposes a hand to get a read on an opponent, players act out of turn in the middle of a very big hand, etc...

Yes, if the club is taking a rake then the game is illegal.

Yeah, why would talk about starting a club and not know the legalities - the most vital part of running any business.

As a business owner, I suggest you think about talking to guys who already run clubs or researching yourself. Message boards are nothing to base a business move off of.
