How important is it?

How important is it to protect ur BB ...
if it is raise 3-4x
is hands like
10Q ... 10J ... 10K ... worth the call
or should u dump the hand?

Should u reraise with hands like
KJ, KQ,AQ,AJ ...
how much should i reraise it?
is 3x the raise a good enuff raise? or is it a little to much?

this question is asking in the situation when your stake size is close to even with the players

  • classic - It depends.

    Tournament? Cash game?

Generally you're not defending with these hands. But it depends on your read of the player attempting the steal.

I like to raise the potsize when I'm reraising. But it really depends on what is happening within the context of the game.
  • this would be cash games
  • Every single time, it depends. Personally I don't mind folding all of the original hands as generally speaking you are deep stacked in a cash game. Often times cash games come down to tonnes of boring little pots and the one big confrontation that you get in which decided whether you win big or lose big, as generally the rest of time is spent grinding.

But really how do you answer this question? Has this guy raised your blind the last 20 times, is he apt to smooth call your re raise and then out play you post flop, what has your table image been all night, how tight has the game been on a whole, what has the raiser been doing all night, in which position did he raise, are you comfortable playing it out of position the rest of the hand... etc.

I mean this is truly impossible to give a difinitive answer to.

Personally the cash game I am usually in is generally a few of my friends that play together constantly and whoever shows up lose money to us that night with inferior skills, and I asses my blind defence based on who raised my blind. Generally the players who come that night are extremely weak, or call way too often and out playing them postflop is a cinch if they miss so it is free money. And if it is a guy who I know how they play then it depends on whether I read him as strong on that hand, or just goofing around trying to rob my blind.

Anyways, post some circumstances and this question can be answered better, I would say.
  • Cash game, blinds steal are not as important in comparison to tournament play. (now guys, don't even think about stealing my blinds in a cash game :D) You are in no pressure to make any plays, you can basically sit there all day and wait for premium hands. At the same time, if you notice there are people who are raising your BB way too often, you might want to "do something about it".

Everything depends on the situation, what is the raiser's table image? will you be able to flop top pair if he applies alot of pressure? etc etc.

Yes, but if other players notice that (particularly the aggressive ones sitting on your right) they're going to constantly be robbing you and that's not good. As you say "it depends". It really comes down more to feel than anything I think, and this comes down to experience. If you know a guy that will auto raise the button but back down quickly in the face of strength, I'll be inclined to auto 3 bet and bet the flop. Of course if a rock that hasn't raised in 10 orbits raises, I'll generally give him the benefit of the doubt and fold anything marginal. Sometimes you'll just want to call, see a flop and go from there. You also will want to take into account if it's the SB raising your BB or the button which will be the difference of whether you have the positional advantage post-flop.
