Turbo/Speed NLH Tournament Tips

Hi Everyone,

I will be entering a satellite NL Hold'em SnG tournament with aggressive blinds. Basically, I will start with 50 chips and the blind schedule will be as follows: 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, 4/8 ....15/30 capped. Each blind level is 10 minutes. There will be 10 players at the table.

My plan is to see a few flops for cheap, hope to get a monster flop (very unlikely) and double up fast. If I am dealt a monster hand (i.e. AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AK, AQ) I will probably go all the way with it. I know that I can't stay tight and that I'll have to loosen up and try to stay above the average stack before the blinds start eating me.

Nevertheless, any tips and strategies on how to win a turbo tourney? I would appreciate your feedback. Feel free to share your experiences as well.

Thanks,
Fabio

  • I for one never understood the point to these tournaments...it's poker, not nascar.

In any case, I suppose if you're taking part in one, your strat is as good as any...although if you don't get a hand in 30 minutes or so, you're doomed.
  • No kidding! I understand luck will play a major factor, but I also understand that in order to by lucky you have to work harder to refine your game. That said, I'm more concerned about tips/strategies regarding the first 3 or 4 blind levels. If I haven't doubled up by then....then I'm really doomed.
  • Understanding that there will be more variance in one of these tournaments, You'll have to be involved in more hands than you would in a regular tournament. Push premium hands HARD and expect callers. Big aces and any pairs become more valuable. You won't be able to avoid coinflip decisions, so hope for the best. Just try not to get involved in hand for a lot of chips with the worst hands. You will need to get lucky to win this. Good luck.
  • Don't play.

No need to go too nuts that early. Play a little more aggressive than usual, but you're not pushing any two.... yet.

Thanks for the tip. Luck will be a major factor. I'll let you know how I do this Saturday!
