What would you do??? Playing poker with the boss

Scenario:
You are invited over to future bosses house for Super Bowl Sunday. There will be a poker tournament before the big game. Would you?
a. Play your best, show off your poker skill, bluff when necessary, re-rasie, check-rasie etc...use all the tools you know to try and win
b. Play for fun, who cares
c. Let you boss win, if it comes down to it
d. other

I guess my concern is, should you reveal your poker side? He might think of it in a negative way, if he finds out you play too much etc...

Im sure Im reading into it more than necessary, but im curious of any inputs.

Thanks

  • TAKE HIM DOWN!! No question about it.

He'll have much more respect for you if you show what you know and take him down quickly and painfully.

My own boss is a new player as well, and we are always talking about getting together for a game or two, but he isn't comfortable about it yet. I have also played against my subordinates, and although I will sometimes use it as a trump over them, it's only a scare tactic, and never seems to work anyway. Besides, if I ever discovered or suspected they LET me win, I would probably end of giving them a harder time than if they had beaten me honestly.

Work is work...Poker is WAR disguised as a game.
  • Up the stakes, win the business, and be your own boss! ;)

Seriously though, I won't go easy on my 10-year-old son, why should my boss be any different? If you're going to play, play your best. Otherwise, just deal :D
  • When your boss sucks out on you (and it WILL happen) take it graciously. Otherwise, play your own game.
  • I say play him/her a couple of times for mirco money, and give them a victory or two. Then up the ante, and play for a larger buy-in, then ROB THEM BLIND!!!

    Just my 2 cents,

    JohnnieH

ps...where have you been fisticuffs? Haven't heard from you in a while, man!!!
  • Take his money, drink his beer and bang his wife.

Are you looking for any help with your new business? LOL

I'm available to work most nights,(except Wednesdays) and one weekend every month
  • Speaking as a Boss, I would expect you to try to win.

I would think nothing of someone who check raised me or let me call bluff off my last chips.

That's cause the whole Daughter thing just makes it sick.  Nothing wrong with banging the wife though, that's all good.
  • Depends how hot the daughter is...
  • I say TAKE HIM DOWN. I just played with my boss and a few people at work. We had a staff only tournament. We played $20 tournaments. I won two, and he won the last one. Now, he's always on the phone with me, trying to get tips. He just set up his first online poker account. I say show him that you're good, it will only make him respect you more, and it will also give you something to talk about, which might mean a better working relationship... equals a RAISE !!!
  • :as

In all seriousness I've seen this happen a few times. My way of approaching it now (which seems to work well for me) is tell them you are a serious player before the event and ask if anyone would have a problem with it. Then you go in there expected to win so do your thing and don't let them down.

This avoids the whole rounders thing where guys like us are all deemed as hustlers in cases like this. Not only that but throw in a couple of well timed chip tricks and perfect reads and you'll have them all eating out of the palm of your hand, on the felt and at the office!

  • shouldn't we know what the job will be?
If your going to be a dealer at a Casino, Strut your stuff
If you are a going to be helping people at Gambler's Anonymous, might want to lay back
Having said that : How old is the Daughter?

Enough people play poker now that it's not a total shocker when someone who actually has some skill shows up at one of these things. It's not considered "dirty" to be a poker player anymore. I wouldn't go out of my way to advertise myself as anything special. Just go in, have a good time, and play some cards. If this guy's hosting a game, it's because either he's a poker player himself, or he's aware of the popularity of it and just wants to have a good time.
  • Thanks for the responses.

Im just going to have fun with it. Maybe ask if they have that suit in their hand when 3 of the same suit flop and they look at their cards...lol. But overall just have fun and hope to get invited to future games to get the know more people.

Hey Johnnie. I have been super busy with school, mostly getting ready for recruiting season. Which went well, hence the post. As for the job its with a national accounting firm (Big4). I am looking forward to getting income in, instead of paying for school. Too bad my poker winnings have not been able to finance my WHOLE education...that would have been sweet.

Thanks again for your thoughts. I'll let you know how it went.
  • Sweet. Welcome back to the forum. LOL
  • I say "stick it in him" He probably does it to you on a daily basis. He will respect you more or fire you.

    Hey you're a gambler aren't you?
  • Usually my boss, myself and a few co-workers play free money on Poker Stars.

Yesterday I was at home sick and my boss called me at home telling me to go online and play with him.

He probably used the "search player" button and realized your "sick" ass was already playing, so why not join him!!!

p.s. it sounds like you have a good boss, don't try to nail his wife. (or daughter)

Actually I wasn't. He probably searched saw I wasn't playing, then called me to come and play.

Sure you were!! You were probably at home reading Harrington and admiring the bracelet El took from you last week!! :D

    Yeah, please don't try that.
  • Always try to beat anyone and everyone at the table. You're doing yourself a dis-service otherwise.

When Linda Johnson was here in July for the seminar she gave with Jan Fisher, she used a great line.

"You should be willing to check-raise your mother'

Why would your boss be any different?

Good luck on Super Bowl Sunday!
  • I beat my bosses quite regularly...

I would never take it easy on them, we play heads up quite a bit for practice, so we both want to play our 'A' game. We all have a lot of pride and competitive spirit.
  • I am "the boss". And I would expect the guys to treat me like anyone else.
