Playing Slow on Purpose

Recently, well right this very instant, I was playing on Absolute in an SNG and one player kept using his allotted time bank for EVERY single turn. Now I know he is doing this to irrate other players into playing badly, how would anyone here deal with a player like this? Thought?

  • Theres really nothing you can do, unless playing slow yourself is going to piss him off and make him stop doing it. But theres nothing wrong with him doing this, by which I mean the site wont do anything. Just try to not get pissed off and take advantage of everyone else who is upset playing badly.
  • Support will do nothing? Even though makes a one hour SNG last 2?
  • Well, I know that ScottyZ sent an email to Pokerstars support asking about short stacked players who use their 1 minute time bank during the bubble hoping that people on other tables will bust out while they're stalling their own table. Support said there was nothing wrong with this. The point is that this guy was using time alotted to him, just like people stalling on the bubble.

I haven't heard anything specifically from Absolute, write them an email if you think something should be done.
  • "Rules" wise... it's 100% allowed and can't do anything about it...

However I doubt there's a rule against playing wearing only saran wrap

    Yea...

Let that sink in for a second....

"Realistically" they should be dragged out back and beaten.

  • Just tell the guy someone will raise his blind every time.
  • I eventually knocked this idiot out. It felt good.

I wrote to support and they said there was nothing wrong with it. It's funny how online you get away with so much more crap. I am sure no casino in the world would allow someone to stall EVERY time the action go to them.

And Mark is right, they should be beaten. But not with wiffle bats, that's just fun.
  • If I know it's going to make people mad I don't mind doing it. If i'm given 30 seconds to make a move then I have that amount of time. Believe me the time allowed on line is nothing compared to the time most people are given in a casino.

2nd as I usually 4 table my SNG's I sometimes need that much time to get myself in gear on the table where I am to act. I have had 4 tables all wanting me to act at the same time. Sometimes it's not on purpose but just seems that way for a bit.

Come on Mark, drag me out back and beat me..... I just might like it :)
  • Using your time bank when you need it is one thing. To use it to slow down a SNG is another.

The timebank wasn't designed to piss people off intentionaly. Sure it may be a strategy but so is being an asshole at the table, and I don't think that is right either. With idiots online you can hide their chat.
  • Its the same thing with people post-folding (Devin's patent strategy :D) in single table SnG to try to squeak in the money. I have played a few where this has happened (both working/not working). I remember PS had a link on their site awhile back saying that it is the players choice and if they choose to go that route, its their choice. Wait..this is completely off topic.

Back to the topic at hand, sometimes people multi-table (ex. HG) and it might take them longer to react. Where as the player is given the 30 seconds per hand, if they choose to do that, don't let that affect you. Its very annoying to have a SnG last 2 hours, but don't let that affect the way to play. There will always be jerks like that around, don't let that affect your feelings towards an otherwise profitable way to play.
  • Seems like a Tilt move and honestly, it probably works pretty good for buddy (not this time but...)
If he frustrates just one player into just ramming in his chips out of frustration, then he's acheived his goal.

If and when I run into this, I usually open another SNG (generally always have at least 2 running) or a ring game.
While buddy is "pulling his goalie" during his time bank, I'll be concentrating on the other table so as not to get frustrated.

p.s. Acid Joe, you are the last guy I expected to be outwardly manflirting...
  • Westside:

In one SNG (single table 10 person) I played, after 1 hour we still had 7 left. Others I've been in the money in 25 minutes. A SNG is always an unknown. I usually allow an hour per but that's a guide not a rule. If I played 2 hours I damn well had better be in the money if not winning it.
  • Not every time but i have used my time bank strategically to ensure certain players (often shortstacks) are hit with the move up in the blinds when in later levels ... i don't consider that anything against the rules

Don't think what he is doing is either, it just may not be considerate
  • Here is my e-mail

    My username is FlintBones.

The player in question is HATEAA

He purposely uses his timebank for every single hand. It causes the play to
slow to a crawl and the SNG I was in to last 3x as long as normal. He
knows he is doing and claims there is nothing the other players can do and
laughs it off. Is there something you can do? This has a negative effect on the
    play.

    Their response

    Dear Andrew,

    Thank you for your email.

Even though players are entitled to play using any strategy they
choose, our policy for sitting out in tournaments is in line with the
majority of online sites, and with every single land-based poker room in the
    world. It is as follows:

Real Money Tournaments: If a player has paid a real money entrance fee
for a tournament, they are entitled to play as many hands, or as few,
as they like. If they choose to sit out for any part of the tournament,
or even the entire tournament, that is their prerogative, however they
will be required to pay each small and large blind as required, and
    ante if applicable.

Play Money Tournaments: Players that register for play money
tournaments, must take their seat and actively play (check, fold, call or raise)
at least one hand within the first blind limit period. This is defined
as the time between when the first hand has been dealt, and when the
blind limits increase for the first time. If players have not taken this
action within the specified time period, they will be removed from
their seat, and their remaining chips will be removed from tournament
action. However, if players do take the minimum required action within the
specified time, they are entitled to sit out after that for as many
hands as they wish. If they are absent from the table, their blinds and
appropriate antes will be contributed into the applicable pot, until the
absent player has no chips remaining.

While sitting out in tournaments is considered by some players and by
some professional poker experts as a viable tournament strategy,
patience and strategic raises by players that are seated in a tournament will
remove absent players quickly and without a benefit to them.

Although I might agree that players can place in the top 1/2 of the
tournament this way, but it is virtually impossible to go beyond that due
    to the increasing blinds.

Usually, when somebody employs this strategy, they are doing themselves
more harm than good. They end up joining when the blinds are high and
their stacks are short. Plus, they have almost no information about
    their opponents.

You will find that almost NO real money tournament players would
attempt to employ such a strategy. While a few players may survive with the
‘sit out strategy’ and then get lucky with their short stack, by
percentage, it is a very poor strategy.

Thanks for playing at Absolute Poker! If there is anything else we can
help you with, please let us know. We're here for you!

    Sincerely,

    Abby

So they don't exactly get it, do they?
  • Haha, I bet this is your first time dealing with online poker support. If you want a real reply I guess you'll have to respond and tell them thats not what you mean.
  • Just send a response that says, "Did you read my f*cking message?". Usually then they take time to read it. Then they'll tell you the guy isn't doing anything wrong.
  • I agree with Dave, just open up something else, and be patient.

Then whens its your turn, think about your play for 14.9999999999999 seconds, then fold.

    ouch! go play flag football
  • I am just going to drop it as this point. What use is it?

Just for the record I have dealt with support before.

I am surprised that people really don't take issue with this style of play. Perhaps I'll employ it at the next Bristol or the Ryder cup. I feel like getting hit with something.

    Oh well. Moving on.
