Top Threads of 2005

Thanks to stpboy for suggesting the idea for this thread, and for allowing me to bounce the drafts off of him.  Anyway, here's what I consider the top topics from last year:

15. (Long) Trip Reports
Way too many good ones to pick just one, so a few are listed below. If I had to pick, I would give the edge to BBC though as he gave us both Vegas and AC, his reports are always good reading, and because his AC trip spawned a sister thread which made #5 on this list.
14. NEED MORE HANDS (401 Decision)
Wader's boredom turned into a free-for-all parody of the "traditional" forum post.

13. Name the Beaver
This thread was like a game show gone bad, but was a whole bunch of fun.

12. Favorite beers
While I'm not a beer drinker, this thread seemed to grab hold of a number of the more "sophisticated" beer drinkers on the forum (and the plain old heavy drinkers), thus earning it's place on this list.

11. WSOP
Obviously the biggest event (or series) in poker, some of our own headed down.  A massive "sweat thread" for Team Canuck members Devin Armstrong (who finished 6th for $72,380 USD) and Bob Jarrett (who finished 28th for $7,240 USD) in the $1500 Limit Hold'em event.  Devin followed up with a great report on the tournament (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4 part 1, Day 4 part 2, Day 5 part 1, Day 5 part 2, and Day 5 part 3).  After this, we sweated Dave Scharf in the main event here, and he was kind enough to repay us with another great report (Wednesday, Thursday morning, Friday morning part one, Friday morning part two, Saturday morning, Sunday morning, and Monday morning).

10. Challenge to Lee
I think it all started here, but did it ever blow up with pieces landing here, there, and everywhere.  Finally a "spatula thread" to clean up the whole mess.

9. Zithal Challenge Parody
WARNING: This thread could be hazardous to our health (especially if carbonated beverages coming out of your nostrils bothers you).  Started by the previous "Lee" incident, easily the funniest post I've yet to see on the forum.

8. What gives you your edge?
It's always good when a question comes along that makes you think.  BBC's query forces some introspection we often overlook.  While there are many good answers in this thread, the original question stands alone as worthy of thought.

7. Online disconnection ethics
Ethics and poker - an interesting mix.  This thread has some very honest (and opposite) views.  Regardless of your particular point-of-view, as in the previous thread this makes you think, but it also asks you to draw your own "line in the sand".

6. Blind Theory
This series of articles is a must-read for any tournament host.  Zithal (KW's "Host of the Year") has a thorough understanding of tournament directing, and here he explains a lot of the details behind blind schedules.  As a host/TD myself, I'm looking forward to his next series of articles (hint, hint)!

5. Floor Ruling at Caesars
Another entertaining controversy - this time over the enforcement/interpretation of rules.

4. BBC Magi Thread
No comments except that this was fun to read, and will explain a lot :)

3. Ryder Cup of Poker
Now the Royal Cup Team Invitational, this idea took off faster than anything I've seen.  Honorable mention should go to Dr. Tyore who somehow sparked this craze with his KW Grudge Match (although why I don't know since it is NOT a team event) and Compuease for his sister thread Southern Ontario Challenge Match which proposed a regional team competition.

2. My next MAJOR tournament
The most interesting and well-planned announcement for a home game EVER, and caused a lot of wasted hours (and lost sleep).

1. KWSOP Cancelled
A very sad day for Ontario poker.  A lot of hard work went into this, and very sad to see it all go to waste.  It originally started with this announcement before dying an untimely death.

Comments

  • On a personal note, the most important posts to me personally this year were:
    • KWSOP Cancelled - a friend sent me the email for this, and my curiosity into the legal side of things brought me to the forum. Prior to this I rarely played poker (maybe a few times a year) and was totally clueless. This sad day actually sparked my "poker career", so at least some good has come of it.
    • Free Friday Night Game - my first post. Here I learned that poker isn't "for fun" - get some $$$. :)
    • Bristol 'Easy' Poker Bash - my first tournament after starting to read/play a bit more. Here I started my journey into the giant web that is KW poker.
    • KW Nameless Holiday NL Tournament - my first tournament which started my hosting career in KW. Luckily I had Zithal to train/mentor me, so things started a lot smoother than I expected (thanks Rob - this Padawan appreciates it).
    • 500th post - a sad post really, and I didn't notice it was my 500th till JohnnieH PM'd me later. If I'd known, it would have been better (honest)!
    • Ryder Cup Kitchener - captain's picks - I was very surprised at being selected at all, and especially this high. One of the high-points for me so far.
  • What an excellent job you did Trevor, an homage to the CPF for the year of 2005! I'm really enjoying reminiscing through all of these posts.

    stp
  • No kidding... thanks Trevor. Great freakin' job... I can't wait to sift through all of it. I'm going to make this thread sticky for a while.
  • Although I would agree with all you highlighted above, I think the most inspirational and moving thread would have to go to WitchDoctor's Charity Event for the little London girl with cancer. I think that qualifies at the least for a 'runnerup' category, or under it's own category of some kind. Personally, not only was it one of more touching events, but a huge success as well.
  • Good post.. someone really needs to go through this place and do something with all the content..

Thread #4 should atleast have the original 8 page post that lead to the link you have..

I'm honored to see 4-5 of my threads on that list and can't help but chuckle about how close they were to never being posted here..

This was a great thread and an excellent cause, it was in the top 20. Originally we had thought about a Top 10 and trevor found it impossible to limit it to 10, hence the 15. I believe it was fairly difficult to get a mix between factual poker information, community involvement and just down right hilarious stuff. I'm sure on any day several forum members would have Dave's Charity Event in their top 15.

  • I missed the fact that you were involved in this great post idea as well, stp... kudos to you., and of course Trevor.

It was real difficult to get it down to this list, and to be honest I was running out of team (or it would be posted in 2007 :) ). My notes are at work, but off the top of my head the Degree tournament, the Charity event, and the Bristol TOC (KW bias :) ) were the last few to be cut. However, those 15 were really a starting point. I fully expect to see another couple dozen added by various readers - please just include the links :) .

Thanks. I tried to keep all the linkes for a few related threads together (except for the Ryder Cup spider-web) and missed that.

LOL - I'm glad they made it on. I'll give ya this - your posts are usually interesting and provocative enough to kick-start some interesting conversations :) .

Personally, I think Zithal's post somewhere in the middle of that mess (page 4 or 5?) summarizing the preceding "discussion" is a candidate for POTY...

    Nice post beanie.
  • It looks unanimous....foreshadowing?

Zithal should get the crown for the best post of Jan, 2005! HAHAHA awesome.
  • Wow!

What a great idea for a post. I will enjoy rereading alot of the top 15 you have chosen, as well as the ensuing additions I am sure alot of the members will add.

One of my personal favourites was All Aces WSOP live updates. #11 in the list under "sweat thread".

Another of my favourites was the Tournament for a Cause thread. I had the honour of taking part in it and getting busted out by my own brother who went on to win the thing. I guess he felt sorry for me and busting me out, so he gave me the gorgeous table he won as part of the 1st place prize.

All in all this is an amazing place for information, education about the game of poker, meeting new people (I have had the pleasure of meeting many forumers at various events in 2005) and above all this is a great place for entertainment. Who can possibly compete with BBC for being not only obnoxious and irritating, but downright hilarious too? And ScottyZ whose posts are not only hilarious, informative, off the wall, in depth, thought provoking, but damn near make you piss yourself too?

I look forward to meeting many more forumers in 2006.

    Good luck to all!
  • I didn't feel sorry for bustin you out,

I feel sorry for you that Q9 is your favourite hand
  • "queen-nine win all the time"
  • Just a note that January's almost over so I un-stickied this thread.

Thanks again especially to beanie and to stp for creating it... have a great rest of 2006, and here's to more "best of"-worthy threads!
  • Since Neil put me in the end of year mood, here's a quick bump from last year and a request for this year. While I had a blast creating this list and enjoyed the response, I'm simply too busy to do this again this year :( . However, if somebody else has time to run with this again, it would be a nice thread to close the year with on the forum.
  • This was a great thread and a great idea. I hope we get some volunteers to sift through 2006's nominees.
