Think the game would have been different if the score was 2-1 in the first? I personally think that it would have ended up the same result. It was also interesting to watch the reffing. In the first there were so many penalties, but in the second they seemed to just "let them play" and that opended things up.
It was a great fast-paced game and one to remember for sure. I am also originally from Red Deer (home of the Rebels and Brent Sutters "day-job"). Hope the Rebels to great this year too.
I'm sooooooo glad the result wasn't posted in the Subject line.... I was out last night and had to PVR the game. Thanks to dd for your discretion, intentional or not.
I watched the game, and of course I loved it. The boys played really well, and that goaltender (Poagie?) is just what the Leafs need. Basically, a goaltender. But that's another matter.
About the 2-1 "hypothetical" score, I can't help thinking that it would have been a different game if the Russian goal had counted, as it should have. Now, the Canadians were clearly the better team, so they very likely still would have won. But it would have been closer, I think... not so much of a blowout. The Russians get the goal, get a bit of momentum on their side, and things might have been different.
Additionally, the fact that they scored a goal, and then FOUND OUT that they scored a goal but that it didn't count as one, might have significantly taken the wind out of their sails. It's like: "Geez, even when we score we don't score... what the hell are we supposed to do here?" I bet that if they were given a choice, the Russian team would probably have preferred not to know about the non-goal until AFTER the game.
Couldn't watch the game myself, as Thursday night is POKER NIGHT here, but the wife's screams and cheers kept us all well informed of what was happening. When she came upstairs and told us to stand and sing the anthem though, it was a bit much. GREAT GAME GUYS, CONGRADULATIONS!!
