The Pokerstars 300 FPP level 1 tournaments that qualify for level 2 tournaments (1 spot per 10 entries) are a good way to get to the next level (the level 2 events have 2 qualifying spots). They are pretty easy tournaments, I have qualified 3 of 5 and a 4th finished on a bubble to get 200 of 300 points back.
Party Poker had some 5,000 player point events last year (1 slot each, about 400-600 per event), and you can get 1,000 Party points if you deposit $500 and leave it there for a week, so in theory that's a free way to try it over time.
