Canadian Poker Championships January 25, 2006

Who's on the way to the Canadian Poker Championships?
This is my first time going...very exiting.
I'm playing in all three tournaments.....$200...$300...and the $500
Any suggestions from the experienced players of the CPT or Edmonton locals.

OHHH YEAH here comes Kitchener, Ontario

  • I think theyre calling it the Alberta Poker Championship...
There are two "Canadian Poker Championships" ...the one thats run out of Yellowhead in the Fall and the Party Poker one.

Its not going to be too big a deal around here. Its being held at one of our smaller casinos and the side action at the recent CPT events hasnt really been great either.
  • LOL.

There another Canadian Poker Championship. www.canadianpokerchampionship.com
Its a 5K US event being held in the Bahamas. Why held in the Bahamas? Because Canada has by-laws restricting the maximum buy-in of a tournament. So I believe they decided to hold it outside of Canada.

    Party Poker running Satelites!
  • The reason it is being held in the Bahamas is because the group putting it on is not licensed anywhere in Canada. The Federal Govt. has no bylaws about gambling, Federal Law has passed this issue onto the Provinces and each Province has its own Gaming Act. Online gaming while not illegal in Canada is also not sanctioned anywhere in Canada therefore no event may be held in any Province unless it is held in a licensed venue, in other words a Casino. Poker Stars is very reputable and I personally would have no concerns about entering one of their events, but we should all be leery of "fly by night" groups that just appear and put on events with high dollar buy-ins and/or prizes.

    Cheers,

    Lee
  • This even was originally promoted for a year+. They couldn't find a venue in Canada (they were looking at the possibility of holding it on Exibition grounds). $500 NLHE followed by the ME of 5K. But nothing could be sorted out. So instead they decided to hold it in the Atlantis Resort I believe.

Played two qualifiers, lost once on the Final 15 (JJ to TT) and than in the recent one QQ to 33 for a big pot in the early going. All in pf btw.

  • Ohhh my friend don't worry i won't be caught with out them.....good luck in up coming games......I hope to see you at my place soon
  • The first 2 events will likely have 120 players or so...

The 500 will be a split field -- 120 (approx) players on friday and the same on Saturday with final 15 of each day playing on Sunday.

My guess is that this event will be full, but will attract less out of towners (Vancouver, Saskatchewan) than the previous CPT events here, and will be filled with less experienced players (overall) than previous events.

Casino Edmonton has $100 NL event every Saturday and the level of play has been declining significantly lately and I expect the same at the upcoming bigger events.

    Good Luck
  • I'm very exited, this is going to be my first time going out west....not sure what to expect. I'm playing the $500 tour. on Saturday.
I'm sure hoping that this trip pays for it self...but no matter what i should gain some good experience.
Only 2 weeks till the event.
  • My wife and I am going to try and make it down, I will call later today, and see if I can pay over the phone. Does anyone know the tourney structure? As well as the payout structure?
    Thanks,
    *mike*
  • WOW!!! Is that your wife in the pic

I know that you can register over the phone...you have to choose what day you want to play the $500 buy-in.
I originaly wanted to play on Saturday, but I think Friday is a much better idea.
  • Thanks, thats her in Mexico!
Thanks for the info! Unfortioinatly, due to my shift work schedule, I can only play Saturday, and can't make the other tournies, but thats probably a +EV move!

  • I am planning on entering the Jan 25th (WED) CPT event in Edmonton.

This is my first time entering a CPT event and wanted to know if you could register the day of the event or do you have to pre-register over the phone? Also do you pay on the day of the tourney, or do you have to pay via credit card on the phone?

Also I know the tourney starts at 4 pm... What time do you recommend getting there?
  • derthert....My understanding is that the $200 and $300 events are sold out...you can pre-register by phone for the $500 and just pay the registration fee
