The local group of guys I play with use it for single table sats only. We used it to send hometown champ to CPT Championship in Regina last summer. Winner represented us, and kept 50% of what he won in Regina, splitting other 50% amongst other 10 players (5% each). Of course 100% of nothing is still nothing.
We have only done it in MTT when at the break only 11 players remained. Don't really care for it much though.
The home games that I am familiar with we often play 11 handed MTT. Have also played 8 handed MTT. Personally I prefer the 11handed but the 8 isn't bad either, you must have a good seating software program for it all to run smoothly.

Seriously though, I know that at least some casinos do 11 person tables.
