Sometimes it pays to bet

Quick intro
Not an overly interesting hand except for my weak raise preflop.
Table was mostly loose passive and my table image was loose aggressive.

As soon as the flop hit I wasn't putting another bet in. But then it checked around twice so I figured everyone had missed and probably thought I was slowplaying a monster. Turns out I was.

  • Nice table you found.
  • What were you trying to accomplish with your preflop raise and then lack of continuation bet on the flop/turn? Ugly... You lucked out that no one caught their straight on this hand. You can't get away with this consistently enough for this to be a +EV play.
  • Ummm... I hit the wrong button.... yeah thats it.
I have no plausible defence for the preflop raise except I was having fun. Post flop I didn't think anyone would fold to my bet and the potential for a check raise from the three-better was there. To be honest I was done with the hand as soon as the flop hit. I made no claim that it was an EV+ play and I really shouldn't have raised that junk into a loose passive table. I just got lucky in that the flop apparently missed everyone. A more interesting discussion is whether the bet on the river could be EV+. Multiway pot checked all the way home. Does it pay to bluff in this situation?

Once again you are 99% correct that the preflop raise was junk. But I don't think a continuation bet is automatic in this case.

    Cheers Paul
