Skill vs Luck

I think we all agree that luck does have a certain percentage play in poker. However over christmas dinner we had a discussion as to how much luck plays. My dad and his brother think that there is more luck than skill involved in Hold em. I disagreed. How much is the percentage in other people's opinion (or math analysis). I would appreciate your input thanks.

  • other than the long term short term, blah,blah,blah...put it this way, there are players that are consistant winners and many that are consistant losers, obviously more skill than luck
  • My dad claims that he read a book that said that poker is 60% luck and 40% skill, while chess is 95% skill. This sounds reasonable for a tournament or game. In the long, LONG run, a poker shark/pirana will do much better than a fish.
  • In the long term I don't think theres any luck at all. In the short term of course theres alot, losing to a two-outer on the river is definately unlucky, but over a long enough time everyone is going to be dealt the same number of trips, flushes, fullhouses etc. If it were largely luck everyone would be a break-even player.
  • Luck in poker - the cards you are dealt vs. the cards the other people are dealt (and in hold 'em 'vs. the cards dealt out on the board')

Skill in poker - what you do with them

Over the long term, the luck side will even out as a previous poster stated.  The skill in knowing what to do with the cards you are dealt will determine how well you win/lose when the cards fall as they randomly do.
  • So even if poker is 40% skill and 60% luck the person closer to 100% in the skill department will come out ahead over the long run. In the short term I know luck can play a large part. I've had days where I could flop no wrong no mater what the cards.
  • Sure, luck plays a role. Just look at Moneymaker!

Skill is there too. There's a balance. If you look at the final tables of any WPT, you generally see a couple of seasoned pros and a few young guns. Any of these big tourneys, there's about a 1 in 500 chance to win it. Guys like Gus or Daniel or Ivey seem to make the FT far more than average, so there must be more than just luck to it.

I'm sure the younglings have some skill but I'd have to expect they had to catch a lot of luck to make it there. So did the pros but more likely they needed a lot less.
  • The only time I ever lose a hand is due to luck

either I start with the worst of it and can't get lucky ....or

I start with the best of it and the other guy gets lucky
  • No offense, but you father and his brother have no idea what they are talking about. Ignore them.
