Westside's Turning Stone Trip Report

Headed down to the States on Christmas eve, stayed at relatives for the night..blah blah blah...Headed over to Turning Stone on Christmas day, arrived at approx. 5pm, and got a really good rate for the casino hotel for $79.99. Checked-in, and headed down to see whats the action is like at the poker room. They had 6 tables going when I arrived. 2 1-3, 1 3-6, 2 100max, and 1 5-10. I was going to sit down at the 100max, but both tables had 4-5 players who looks as though they all came together, so I decided to go for the buffet first and come back after my meal to see where they stand. Buffet was decent, not great, filling enough but nothing stands out.
Off I went back to the poker room at around 630, they had around 9 tables going by then. I immediately got a seat in 3/6 and bought in for $150. I sat down and we were 8 handed, but the remaining two seats filled pretty quickly after I sat down. There were 4-5 players who seems to be regulars at Turning Stone, most of them are on first name basis with the dealers. Didn't play a hand first two orbits, tables consisted of passive players, most hands are 5 or more to the flop, and almost always went to a showdown.
Played a couple of pots in the first hour, one I had AQs in EP, raised to hopefully knock out a few players. 3 cold-called, SB folded, BB called. Flop A83, BB check, I lead out, 2 callers, BB folded. Turn Q to complete the rainbow, lead out once again, callers called. River was a blank (a 6 or 7). I once again lead out, one caller. He flipped over A9, I take the pot.
After the first hour, I proceeded to go card dead for 2 hours. Seeing Ax once, and only saw PaintX a couple of times. Limped in from LP a couple of times with 3-5 limpers in front hoping to catch a monster flop to no avail. During those two hours, one guy sat down with around $200, and he looks to be a solid player. He took quite a few tough beats (flop 2 pair vs flop flush, flop trips vs. turn/river straight/flush). Felt a bit sorry for him, but was also hoping I could've taken some of those chips.
Was down to $100 or so after going card dead for 2 hours. The table seemed to have tighten up with a couple of the loose players leaving, we were getting 3 to the flop, showdown once in awhile. I loosen up a bit and played a bit more aggressive to pick up a few small pots to build my stack back up to about even. A player sat down during the stretch, and he would chase any straight/flush draws until the river. He caught a gut-shot straight once on the guy who were taking the tough beats, and caught a couple of flushes for decent size pots. His stack never stayed as he would play any suited card, any connectors, Ax, etc. He left an hour or so later pretty much even with his starting amount.
Here are some hands during the night

Here is one of my more "memorable hands" (there is a much more memorable one later)
57o in BB. 5 limpers, SB called, I checked. 7 to the flop
Flop 4-6-8o. Gives me the nut straight. SB checked, I lead out, 3 limpers called, 1 + SB folded.
Turn K (two suit on board). I lead out once again, 2 callers, player last to act raised, I 3 bet, 1 called 1 folded.
River 9 I lead out once again, caller folded, player once again raised (I figured him for a 7), so I called. He flips over 7-10 for a higher straight to win a $107 pot

Another hand that I wasn't involved in
5 player capped preflop
Flop was KQ7 rainbow. 3 bet - 4 players remain
Turn 5 - 3 bet again - 2 players remain
River 2 - One player goes all in for the last $4 and flipped over AA, the other played flipped over K5 (he was the one the capped preflop)

They ran up to 15 tables by around 11. At one point an interesting thing happened. They initially had 1 5-10 going with 10 players. 3 players showed up saying they wanted to play 5-10. Role call and 2 more players from my 3-6 table said they would play. So they broke up and started a 7 handed and a 8 handed 5-10 table. 15 minutes later, the 3 called were called and left to play 300max, leaving both table 6 handed. 1 of the players got up (said loudly he didn't want to play 6 handed) and put himself on the list again for 3-6. They broke the table and was going to collapse back to 1 table, but another guy showed up and was put in at the 5 handed table. They had 6 handed 5-10 for a good hour before they were able to filled both tables, but playing short handed got a few of the regulars upset as they complained to the floor (I overheard since their table was behind mine)

WARNING:BAD BEAT paragraph, if you HATE reading about bad beats, skip this paragraph
About 1, was about to call it a night. Was down a few dollars from starting but I didn't care about that. I was going to play until the BB got to me and then I would get up and leave. Got AA in 4th position. Raised, got 3 callers + BB.
Flop 773. BB checked, I raised, 2 callers, 1 button fold, BB called.
Turn A. BB (villain) check, I raise, 1 caller, 1 fold, villain reraise, I 3-bet, caller fold, villain call.
I figured villain had 7x or Ax, best case scenerio A7, and he was putting me on AK, AQ or something like that. So I could probably take some money from him EXCEPT
River 7 Villain led out, and I said to myself "(&*!(@&#(!). I called, he flips over 76, and I flipped over my AA, and the whole table goes "ohhhhhh". One guy screamed, well, talked loudly, "is there a bad beat jackpot here?"
Saw a couple more hands, I was down to around $35, got up, tipped the dealer $5 just for giving me that bad beat, and proceeded out of the poker room.

I sat down at a BJ table, and proceeded to lose the remaining $30 in about 6 hands, when my 20 was beat by dealer's BJ, and dealer getting 20 for 2 straight hands

I headed up to bed $150 poorer, but I had a good time (other than A full losing to quads). Most of the dealers there were really good dealers, except for a couple where they just couldn't stop talking. I don't mind the occasional chat, but they just wouldn't stop. Overall, I should've left 1 orbit earlier :D

Here were a couple of interesting stats
I was 0 for 2 with AA (folded on the turn with 3 to a flush and 3 to a straight, winner showed flopped set rivered full house)
1 for 2 with KK
One guy won 5 hands (all flushes) with 23 (no, he wasn't Brad :D)

Comments

  • It's a casino and therefore guaranteed action any night of the year especially holidays.

As for a place to stay...there's a real nice place just a 1/2 mile or so the other way when you come off the highway. Instead of going left for casino, go right and pay only about $100 per room. (can't recall the name of the place)
  • On Christmas eve and Boxing day, the poker room will probably be running normally... that is... about 22 tables, almost any limit you would care for. Even on Christmas day, I wouldn't be surprised to see a few tables going... (although I would call first if you're interested in playing... (315) 361-8676 or 800 386-5366) Thanksgiving Day (in the States) there were about 7-8 table going around suppertime. (I refuse to answer how I know this)
