Major Leak HELP!

Alright....
I have been playing pretty regularly in a live tourney in rockwood..i've made final table 2 times.....but my leak comes in just before i make final table, or at the end of final table. I have no trouble making it down to final 3 at the table, however as soon as that happenes..if i'm not short stack (i'm a strong short stack player) i'll piss away my chip lead either giving it to the short stack, (and through the short stack, give it to the only other guy at the table). This is typically done through calling small-ish (2x bb) all in's...it's not much of a risk for me..except when you call 2 or 3 times (and i'm not calling with 7, 2 os...i accually have decent hands...over cards, or AK..whatever...) and double the guy up he becomes a person to be reckoned with.
Suggestions? Advice?
Where do i fix this leak? throw every hand away and let the other 2 guys battle it out?
thanks in advance
M

  • If you have the chip lead, push them around as much as you can. Make them pay to play with you. Don't throw away hands like AK, you are a huge favourite with that hand. Probably the worst thing you can do is sit out and let the other two players play. Steal, Steal, Steal.

What are you doing with a short-stack that makes you a strong short stack player?

That's a great question to ask yourself.

Funny that this would catch your attention...

Back to the OP, you need to get lucky. Play sound poker, don't be reckless and the wins will come. You really have to know your opponents after watching them for some time, you should have an idea of the types of hands they play and how they bet them.
  • In reply to the short stack question..i do what i (in your opinion) should do with the big stack. It makes sense really, but when i'm short stack i will make huge bets and make the big stack (who are playing tight conservative) give me their blinds until i'm someone to reckon with...by then their steamin' and ready to give me their chips b/c they dont want to play with me. THe last 2 times i've gone on in a tourney i've been down to final 3 on the short stack...*Shrug* and both times i've busted out b4 final table i've been donw to final 3 with the big stack.
So the general consensus is that i should be stealing blinds and making these guys pay for all their cards (i typically do for the most part, but when i sit out i see some brutal poker)....
    *shrugs*
i'll PM about the rockwood game....i've said too much already! ;)

  • Be more specific with your question.

post examples, situations where you might have a tough/awkward decision. "I have a leak, fix it please" doesn't really work..
  • good point...
okay...so ...we've discussed that in short handed play i should be more aggressive..is this only with premium hands, or with every hand..make them pay every time they want to see a flop, or every time i'm on BB......or is it more selective?
I guess that's wher ei'm stuck..should i bet out even tho i'm in no position to win (7, 2 os) or fold and wait til next time?
  • Use your position and chipstack to put pressure on the smaller stacks to make difficult decisions. The starting hand requirement goes WAY down the shorter a table gets. By 3-handed, any single big card or any pair is probably the best hand. Remember that while you are being dealt crap, they are too.

If you are the button, you are first to act preflop and last to act post flop... This is a HUGE advantage. Tend to attempt to steal with lots of cards, but don't be afraid when they come back at you to let it go and try again next time.

Ordinarily, no. If you have a good enough read to suspect you can win the pot with a good bet, then absolutely.
  • This tournament is similar to a shootout.
There are 3 or 4 blind levels and then the top 2 in chips move on to the final table.

I don't know if this has anything to do with your problem but I've played in this tournament and when the time is almost up everyone starts to push their chips in. ( and rightfully so, you can't take it with you to the rail :D )
So I'm not sure if it's a "leak" in your game as much as it's the game itself.
It doesn't take a lot of skill to move all in late because 3 other people have just done so, you have to get as many chips as possible.

It's a fun game though. Really good for people who are looking to gain live game experience at a low limit.

  • Definatly, and a pretty sweet pay out for people willing to play in it!
They've removed the time limit on the table, and now there is a second game running immeadatly following the first (while the final table for the first is running).
Thanks Hork..some great advice...i will definatly take it into consideration next time i'm chip lead and down to final 3..!
    I'm feeling better already! :)
