You're calling? Don't you know who the hell I am???

NAME: Alistair

AGE: 30

RESIDING: Oakville

SINGLE/MARRIED: I am married. My wife does not get in my face about my Poker playing - which rules. But she also knows I win so that's probably why...

WHAT WORK DO YOU DO: I am an editor in a large publishing company. I also do a lot of freelace writing on the side. I write an NFL column for a sports-related web site, as well as some poker stories which I am trying to freelance right now. You guys can check out my archives if you like the NFL: http://www.mikegallay.com/kyte.html

POKER TENURE: Starting playing when I was 15.

HOW DID YOU START: When I was a child in the late 70’s, one of my fondest memories was sneaking down from my bedroom late at night, and trying to catch of glimpse of my father and his friends, who would be gathered around a large table, playing cards. The smoke would be so thick I could hardly see their handlebar moustaches, Terry O’Reilly haircuts and big collars. What I could make out through the stinging of my eyes, was this fascinating game, so full of intrigue and machination. Years too young to really know what was going on, I was absolutely certain of one thing: when I grew up, I was going to be a poker player too.

And so I began my lifelong apprenticeship, which still continues today. I honed my skills in the pool halls and rec-rooms of my youth, fine-tuned them in University, and now ply them at my monthly game with my friends, and at various underground poker clubs and Casino’s in and around Toronto.

FAVORITE GAME: Tournament NL Hold Em, Stud, Adam's Special.

LIVE OR ON-LINE: I am probably the only guy here who doesn't play On-Line. Just not my thing at all.

BEST POKER MOMENT: I went to Vegas for my stag (my boys took care of everything - I just had to bring gambling and partying money) and there we held our first annual Poker Championships. This summer is gonna be the 4th annual event - we have a trophy and everything. I didn't win that first tourney, but I also didn't care because I was already up so much from the craps tables. Nothing beats coming home from Vegas with twice as much money as you left.

HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THIS SITE: I bought chips off of Neil (Sloth). Then I met him on another non-poker site, and discovered who he was. Soon after I went down to Kitchener to play some tourney's with the K/W and Stratford guys.

FAVORITE PRO-PLAYER: Phil Ivey. Huge Balls, this guy loves to put the hurt on his opponents.

VINCE VAN PATTEN OR NORMAN CHAD: Gotta go with Chad. He is a football guy at heart, and that's my other passion right there.

SPORTS-BETTING: I love to bet on sports. NFL football is another addiction. I run 2 pools through-out the NFL season, and get the same kind of high from poker as I do from NFL wagers.

FAVORITE POKER MOVIE: Rounders. I actually want to make a part II. Here is my pitch: Worm has not been seen since. Mike Mc D. has moved down to Vegas and is now a big time pro. He meets a young punk kid, who he decides he likes, and becomes his mentor. The kid is exactly like Worm, and Mc D. wants to help him out, to become a legit player and leave the husslin' days behind him. He is still guilty about Worm going to jail for him. So they work their way around Vegas, L.A. and Reno, making some huge change. Enough that both enter the WSOP. They are kicking so much ass there, they end up on the final table, with - wait for it - Worm! That's right. The Worm has returned, and he is in huge debt. He owes the Russian Mob over a few Million, and needs to place high in the WSOP. Mc D. must struggle with having to play his old friend, and have his new protege in the mix isn't helping. Some serious high poker drama ensues...

I'll keep the ending to myself...

POKER TENURE: Starting playing when I was 18 (so about a year so far).

Then downloaded WSOP 2003 off the net and by Jan 04 I was playing online for real money (practice with play money before). So far from Poker, my bankroll is $900 US.

HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THIS SITE: My friend found out about the Canadian Poker Player magazine and found out this site and told me.

FAVORITE PRO-PLAYER: Gus Hansen, he has HUGE balls. I could never play his style, but he is dam fun to watch.

VINCE VAN PATTEN OR NORMAN CHAD: Van Patten, the guy knows what is doing. Watch for him in the Steve Unger Biography movie (www.Stueymovie.com).

SPORTS-BETTING: I used to bet on PRO-Line when I was 15-18, but after going in the hole for $500+, I think I've found a new love with poker!

FAVORITE POKER MOVIE: Rounders, practically the only poker movie I've seen. Got to rent Shade Movie and see Stuey Movie once it comes out, but I don't think anything beats Rounders!

Poker Tenure: About one year, saw Chris Moneymaker win the WSOP and ever since then, really enjoy playing

Favourite Game: Fixed Hold'Em, No Limit.

Live or On-line: Both, enjoy the dynamic of Live, however my poker idol Chris Moneymaker got his start playing on-line so I've followed suit.

Best Poker Moment: Winning My First House Game (finished at 4:30am very long night).

Favourite Pro Player: Even tho Chris Moneymaker got me really interested in the game, I really really enjoy watching Chris Furgerson play, despite his looks I'd have to say he's a true gentlemen of the game.

  • Shit - over 160 page views and only 6 responses...

That's weaker than pushing in with a 34o on the bubble, getting called (INCREDIBLY!) with a 68o by the chip leader, and then still losing. <--this hand actually happened this weekend...lucky for me I was the other bubble guy and watched this all go down with a big grin...

SINGLE/MARRIED: Married. Wife also plays poker. \m/

WHAT WORK DO YOU DO: I am a Systems Administrator at an engineering consulting firm.

    POKER TENURE: < 1 year

HOW DID YOU START: We used to play a game called hearts and turned that into a drinking game. It got worse and worse as we wanted the 'punishment' (aka: the shot) to be as disgusting as possible (for getting the Q of spades; aka: The Bitch). We finally found something called 'Slivovitz'. This is a plum brandy or so they say. Anyhow, we got wrecked too many times on this foul shite, and decided to come up with a new game without the drinking. Since we needed it to be interesting enough, we decided to play limit Hold Em.

    FAVORITE GAME: Tournament No Limit

LIVE OR ON-LINE: I like live, but I play online.

    BEST POKER MOMENT: Winning.

HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THIS SITE: I started spending lots of money at the poker store and found this site through a link.

    FAVORITE PRO-PLAYER: Howard Lederer

VINCE VAN PATTEN OR NORMAN CHAD: Neither. How about Shana Hiatt? :D

    SPORTS-BETTING: Yes. CFL/NFL football only.

FAVORITE POKER MOVIE: I think the only two movies I've seen with Poker in it are Rounders and Maverick. I probably liked the Poker in Rounders better.
  • I realized that everyone was probably going to name Rounders as their fav. movie, but I was hoping to possibly gleen some previously unknown information about a great poker movie.

If you guys want to see a movie - that is kind of based around poker - and is almost surreally written and directed by JEFF FUCKING PROBST of survivor fame - it's called Finder's Fee. While possibly being the worst movie I have seen this year, I still had to watch it to see how it ended.

For all you young-guns, The Cincinnati Kid is a classic poker movie that you should all check out. I only recently saw this one, and while moving at a snail's pace, it was indeed classic and well worth watching.

  • NAME: Derek

    AGE: 23

    RESIDING: Kitchener-Waterloo

SINGLE/MARRIED: I have a girlfriend who doesn't mind me playing lots of poker (well, almost).

WHAT WORK DO YOU DO: Sales

POKER TENURE: Off and on since rounders came out (1999 I think). I only started getting serious about poker within the past year.

FAVORITE GAME: NL Hold'em tournaments; seven-card stud.

LIVE OR ONLINE: I love live games, but I find I don't have much time to make it out to Brantford that often. As a result, I play mostly online (I like the $5 SNGs on Poker Stars). I also have a regular game here in KW, which usually meets twice a month for a NL tournament with about 7-10 people.

BEST POKER MOMENT: Getting a Royal Flush during a SNG on Poker Stars. I had AJ (diamonds), and the flop had the King and Ten, followed by the Queen on the turn. I checked in first position, and the only other player left in the hand bet pretty big. I pushed all-in, and he called with three kings. It was like Christmas!

HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THIS SITE: From the "Partners" tab on the pokersupplies.com website, which I saw advertised on CityTV during the WPT a couple months back.

FAVORITE PRO PLAYER: I like me, but I think you're looking for a professional player here, so I'd have to say either Phil Ivey (as mentioned, "huge balls") or Howard Lederer (poker tactitian).

VINCE VAN PATTEN OR NORMAN CHAD: Not sure who Norman Chad is, so I'll have to go with Van Patten, as much as I don't want to!

SPORTS BETTING: Nope...just poker, and putting squirrels down my pants for illegal gambling purposes (for all you Simpsons fans out there)

FAVORITE POKER MOVIE: Rounders. I also like the scene from Ocean's Eleven where Brad Pitt and George Clooney hustle those Hollywood stars for a quick few thousand bucks.
  • For you guys wondering about Norman Chad...

He is the ESPN analyst for the WSOP. So basically, he does the same thing as Vince Van Patten, but only for the WSOP, and not the WPT. He may also do commentary for other events, but I have only seen him on the WSOP broadcasts. He will be back for the 2004 series. maybe Dave event got a chance to talk to him?

He is also a long-time columnist for some paper in the midwest - possibly in Wisconsin, as well as a much maligned football expert. His weekly football columns appeared in many publications, including GQ.

A few years ago his column was also run in the Toronto Star - where he picked games against the spread every week. I remember this because the final year his column ran in the Star, he went down in a hail of bullets, sort of like Sonny in the Godfather. I can't remember his actual record, but it was brutal, waaaay below the accepted levels of a football guy making picks, and each week it continued to get worse. Finally, he could only resort to making jokes about himself... Then his column disappeared the next year...

The lesson - as always - don't let your mouth write cheques your ass can't cash.

WHAT WORK DO YOU DO: Freelance television camera operator, mostly for CTV but not always, usually handheld or on a 'mini-jib'.

    POKER TENURE: ~5 years

FAVOURITE GAME: Both NL and limit tournaments, and limit shorthanded cash games.

LIVE OR ONLINE: Both. I like to travel to poker tournaments, and I like Pokerstars for online. Pokerroom is fine too, but the shorthanded games have gotten tougher.

BEST POKER MOMENT: Either going into the final table in Regina as the chip leader and hearing crickets chirping when it came time for my introduction, or surviving a long Devilfish stare-down at an early event in this year's WSOP.

HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THIS SITE: I played a K/W tournament a while ago, and Sloth was there and told me about it.

FAVOURITE PRO PLAYER: The Devilfish. The guy has skills, and he's freakin' hilarious to boot.

VINCE VAN PATTEN OR NORMAN CHAD: I'm not familiar with Norman Chad, so I'll take Vince by default. ("Oh my God, he's flopped top pair... a true MONSTER of a hand!!!")

    SPORTS BETTING: No.

FAVOURITE POKER MOVIE: Yep... Rounders. 'Boiler Room' is good too... it's like a poker movie with no poker.

Interesting bios guys... we have quite the eclectic bunch here. Gotta love poker... the great equalizer... age, income, race, gender... doesn't make a bit of difference to the cards.

FAVOURITE POKER MOVIE: Rounders. Any poker movie in which the winning hand is a 10 high straight instead of the miracle Royal Flush on the river is more believable to me.

  • You know, I don't think I have ever seen The Sting. Is it another McQueen movie? I'm gonna have to get on that.

The Hustler is indeed a classic. I just watched another pool movie this weekend (right after the crappy "Finder's Fee") called "Poolhall Junkies." It was pretty good (Christopher Walken!!!), tried a little too hard at times, but I found it pretty fun to watch. Learned a nice little hustle too, although I don't think I would ever use it on anyone. But for all you husslin' types, it went a little something like this:

Guy tells another guy, "I'll bet you _____, that I can tell you where you got your shoes."

Other guy says, "Are you serious? I'll take that action."

They agree on the bet, and then the other guy says "But whatever you say, you are going to lose, because I bought these shoes on a cruise, on international waters, so whatever you say, is gonna be wrong."

Guys says, "Who fucking cares where you bought them? I said I could tell you where you got them...and you got them on your feet."

  • You've never seen The Sting... get to your local video store!

1973 Robert Redford, Paul Newman, 7 Academy awards.

I can't believe you've never seen it. The poker scene is ... CLASSIC!!!
  • Poolhall junkies is worth the rental for the Christopher Walken bathroom pep talk scene alone. He's trying to get his horse all pumped up, so he tells him a story about a lion in the forest. The lion just lies there, day after day, it's hot, he's heavy, he has a lot of fur, and he just doesn't feel like moving. The 'lesser animals' take note of this and start getting closer and closer to the lion--nipping at his tail, etc... day after day, and the lion does nothing, because he simply doesn't have to.

Until the day comes when the lesser creatures get too brave, and he's had enough, and he destroys every little creature in sight.

Or at least it goes something like that. It goes on for like two minutes or so it seemed, and to hear Christopher Walken tell it is truly awesome.

    Regards,
    all_aces

ps: Poolhall Junkies follows almost exactly the same plot as Rounders, but with pool. The love interest who doesn't want him to play pool, the friend gone wrong, the bad guy pool shark, etc...
  • Hey D

So was that guy with the high-hair, who battled the Silver Spoons dude at the end, a real-life professional pool player? He definitely looked like he knew his way around a table.

I liked that Walken pep-talk part, but I even liked the part more where he layed into that dude from the Usual Suspects - Chizz something or others....

He's like, guy, I'm a millionaire. If I lose 80 large, I just go get another 80. What the hell are you gonna do if you lose???

P.S. Rod Steiger is a true Heavy Weight!

    Rod_Steiger.jpg
  • He's like, guy, I'm a millionaire. If I lose 80 large, I just go get another 80. What the hell are you gonna do if you lose???

You're right. That part was awesome too. Notice that Walken is involved in every scene we've mentioned, but he was in maybe 5% of the movie. Clearly, the world needs more Walken.

The whole 'I bought your shot, so that means it's my shot now' hustle was good, but I forget exactly how it went down.

The guy who kicked Ricky Shroeder's ass looked like a pro to me. No idea who he is, though.

Ok, I just recently watched Poolhall junkies on TMN. It's almost a good movie. Rounders, it ain't.

First of all, Rounders had a GREAT cast. The only decent actor in poolhall junkies is Walken (who is pretty cool) but he's no Malkovich. Also, it's kind of a sappy movie. He ends up back with his girlfriend. I prefer Rounders, where he doesn't go back to the controlling bitch. But, in poolhall junkies, he's in love. Makes me sick.

And, just as the movie is starting to hit a climax and they are getting into a good argument, the stereotypical black guys with shotguns (who had no real role in the movie) show up get their revenge, which just happens to save the day for the hero. Come on. Talk about lazy writing. If you can't think of a decent ending then don't make a movie.

Also, what was that at the end where he is walking out, chatting with his opponent, all buddy buddy? This is the guy who helped kick the crap out of your brother. After he makes the comment about how "he didn't get beat, he got hustled" I thought that a good response would have been a good, swift kick to the groin.

Overall, I give the movie about a 4 or 5 out of 10.

    Keith
  • Actually Keith

The guys brother deserved that ass kicking, dude. If you won $3,000 off some guy in a game, and then instead of paying you, he ran away, I'm sure you wouldn't be telling him, "well, thanks for the game!"

Him and Ricky Schroded got along because of the manly man's code. You know the code, right? Like when the Dolphins always get killed by the Bills, they still shake hands afterwards, unless that Dolphin is Brian Cox, in which case, he just spits on whomever he wants...

I agree with you though, Poolhall Junkies was not first rate in any sense, but still good for a go...

I don't disagree with you, but you'd still think that the guy would be pissed off about it.

You must be hallucinating again. If I was a Bills fan, I too would resort to hallucinogens.

Hey, I gave it a 4 or 5... not terrible or anything. But it can't be compared to Rounders.

Hey, for those people who get TMN, they have been advertising this "TMN original" (translation: "not good enough for theatres". Considering the crap that they WILL show in movie theatres, this kind of scares me) movie called "The Last Casino". As far as I can tell, it's about this Stanford prof who owes a big gambling debt, so he trains this team of students (as he says, "I'm surrounded by math geniuses") to count cards at blackjack (apparently, you need to be a "math genius" to know how to count). It looks like the kind of movie that COULD be really good but probably won't be. Still, I'm kind of curious to see it... and they say it's "based on a true story", whatever that means. Any thoughts?

  • Man, I am so not a Bills fan. I like to see them do well for sure, but I don't really care if they suck either, I just like to give it to all the Miami fans. Two of my best friends are diehard Dolphins fans...

Speaking of which - are you interested in the pick 4 again this year? Only 3.5 months until the season starts...

Last Casino - Oh yeah I'm all over that one. I watch any crappy movie on TMN over regular TV anyways. I read about this Last Casino thing, and will check it out for sure.

There is also a regular reality TV show starting called "The Casino." It's about the dotcommers who bought the Golden Nugget, and are trying to bring it back, like the Maloofs did with The Palms. This one is a Mark Burnett dealie, so it should be very well done...

Possibly because it's (at least loosely) based on the MIT "Bringing Down The House" blackjack crew.
