Port Perry NL Tournament Report

Port Perry Casino had a No Limit Tournament on June 2.
88 players $100 buyin with $50 rebuys and $100 add on

10 prizes
1st was $11 800

The Bad:
I finished a disappointing 14th

The Good:
I feel that I played the best tournament poker of my life.

Summary:
It wasn't some extremely bad beat that put me out it was one of those pesky coin flips that I lost to send me to the rail.

Blinds are 2000/4000 no ante
we have 2 7 handed tables
3 players fold to me I look at my hand and see an Ace I dont even look at the other card and push my 16 000 all in.
Folded to the small who thinks for a full min. (I am not to concerned at this point since I only looked at one card so I could have AA for all I Know)
Small blind calls big blind folds
Small shows 33
I turn over A 4
I dont improve and am left with 1500 since he had less chips than me

Yes maybe I could have waited for a better hand to push with but I wanted to make a move before didnt have enough chips to make it a tough decision for some one to call.
The funny thing is this was the first time I had even attempted to make any kind of a blind steal. I had been limping in preflop 90% of the time untill this point. The only hand I raised and had to show was AA. So I felt my first attempt at a blind steal would succeed without challenge.

Ok so that was how my day ended lets look at some of my play earlier in the day.

During the rebuy period

Blinds are 50/100 I have 4000

I am in Mid Pos I limp with 85 suited
2 limpers behind me and both blinds see the flop

5 5 10 Nice for me
Small blind bets 400
I call as does 1 player behind me
5 5 10 9
SB bets 1000
I consider briefly that he might have a better 5 than me but something about the way he looks at his chips as he bets them convinces me that he dosnt want to be called. My attention now turns to the player behind me. What could he have? I sneek a look at him and he has his cards in the fold postion and seems to just waiting for me to act before he tosses them away. Ok I decide to smooth call again. If the guy behind me raises after acting like he wants to fold I will know for sure that my hand is no good.
River
5 5 10 9 A
SB bets 2000
I call quickly
He shows J 3 for a total bluff
Nice I now have over 9000

Blinds are 100/200 I have 9 000
2 limpers to me on the button I limp with Qc 3c
SB folds BB checks
Flop is Q 8 7
1st limper bets 500 (this is the same guy from above who bet J 3 all the way on a bluff)
folded to me and I call as does 1 player behind me( also same guy behind me in above hand who telegraphed his fold)
Turn Q 8c 7 2c
Limper bets 1500
I decide to raise all in (I have both players covered here so even if I lose this hand I will still have 4000)
Player behind me folds
Limper calls and shows 77 for a set of 7s
Oops I read him wrong now I need a club to win this pot
Alas no club came and I am left with 5000
I really thought I had the best hand here and wanted to win the pot on the turn. The bettor could have had nothing and still bet the flop and turn and the caller behind me probably would have raised on the flop with any decent Q given who was betting.

Blinds 200/400
I doubled up with QQ and now have 11000
Early limper( this guy limped with JJ and 99 earlier in the tourny and Raised with AK and AQ)
I have 88
folded to me I raise to 1500 ( I want to be heads up with the limper since I put him on a Pocket Pair JJ or smaller)
If an A K or Q hits the board I feel he will check( based on his earlier play) and I can win this pot with a bet.
flop 4 6 7
Limper bets 4500 all in
Ok this guy has an over pair to the board or a set.
I have 6 outs if he dosn't have a set
I am approx. a 3-1 under dog here it will cost me 4500 to win 8100 so its an easy fold.

blinds 300/600 I have 8000
folded to me on the button with Jc 8c I limp
SB calls BB checks
flop A 10 7
both players check
I bet 1200 with my gut shot draw
Both fold

300/600 I have 9200
folded to me in the cut off I limp with Q 7
button folds SB calls BB raises the minimum
I call SB folds(this seemed like a weak raise to make so I was concerned he might have a big pair and didnt want to lose any body)
Flop 5s 6s 9
BB bets 600 ( now this was a very weak bet or could be a pot builder bet if he has something like AK of spades)
I call with my gut shot straight draw
turn 5s 6s 9 7
He checks
I bet 3000 he calls ( I am sure he dosnt have an over pair or he would have bet more on the flop so he must have the flush draw)
river 5s 6s 9 7 3s
he checks( I dont think he would check with the flush here but he might if he thinks I will bet again)
I decide to check since my pair of 7s is either good or he is trying to check raise.
He shows K 10 for K high and I win with a pair of 7s

I get no big hands for several levels but continue to build my stack by limping in in Mid to late pos and winning the pot by betting the flop or the turn depending on the reaction of the players in the hand.

blinds 1000/2000 I win a nice pot with AA and now have 30 000

I figure the avg stack at final table will be 55000 so I am in good shape with 2 tables left

I now lose 4 small pots in a row in coin flip situations. (rather unlucky I should have won at least 1 or 2 of them)

Blinds 2000/4000 I have 16000 15 players left

I decide to move in the first chance I get to try and steal the blinds. We are losing 6000 every round of the table now so I need to win a pot soon. I dont get a chance to untill I get the A4 hand I talked about at the start of this report. So I lose my 5th coin flip in a row and I am out of the tourny in 14th place.

Any thoughts?

  • Congrats on making it to 14th position and playing the best tournament poker of your life :D

Too bad that A-4 didn't turn out to be A-A, but hey, thats poker
  • Seems like a perfectly good play moving all-in with the A?, and I couldn't find anything I would have done too much differently with any of your other plays. Very well played, I think.

  • limping Q3s? you didn't feel the need to bet/raise at all with the trip 5s ? especially when the guys behind you folded?

I think you have to raise your trip 5s on the flop to see where you're at, i hate limping Q3s, on the button with callers even.. its not horrible, but when you hit a Qxx flop, its time to muck imo.
  • So was it No Limit during the rebuy period? Before it was limit until the second hour.

So did Jimmy Nixon win again? :P
  • but when you hit a Qxx flop [with Q3s], its time to muck imo.

It sounded to me like he was attempting to pick off someone who he thought was bluffing here. This is a perfectly good hand for that purpose specifically, but I agree that it belongs in the muck in many other situations.
