Quick tips needed for Rebuy/Add-on tournament

Hey Gang,
I just qualified for the daily 40K tourney on Paradise, and then I noticed it's a rebuy / Add-on tourney. I've never played one of these before. I normally just keep it simple and play freeze outs, and SNG's. Any tips on how to play it? Do people always take the add-on? Do you rebuy if you're just down a bit to get a bigger stack? Any strategy tips would be greatly appreciated. It starts in an hour... :D

  • Don't know how much the buyin is, since you qualified for it, I am going to assume it is a significant buyin. Most people will normally rebuy right at the beginning so they essentially start with double the chips.

It really depends on how much you are willing to spend. I wouldn't play much looser than normal, but keep in mind that some other people will play more aggressively knowing they can rebuy if they bust out. Try to identify who these players are and you might make some easy money off them.

Also usually wise to take the addon, especially if it is more chips than the starting stack for the same price.
  • Buyin is $30, and I got a seat in the $5 satellite (I wish it was the real tourney, I was in 2nd when the cutoff was made.).  I don't want to spend a fortune, since it only cost me $5 to get in.  I'll probably do the add-on if the $/chips ratio is favorable.  Basically I guess I'm just going to go by feel, since it's my first R&A tourney.  Thanks for the info though.  Hopefully it'll help.  We'll see how it goes...
  • OK, I took the original $1500 and worked it up to $5200. Then the rebuy was another $2500 for $30, so I took that too. Everyone else seemed to be taking it. There were some maniacs who rebought 5 or 6 times B4 the add-on. It would get to be very expensive playing like that ($150-$200 by the first break). Thanks for the advice Hork42. Hopefully I can make something happen now that the craziness is over.

It can be great to have a couple of those at your table. You should see the $3 turbo rebuys on Pokerstars... even the $10+1 Rebuys can be absolutely nuts. Their plan is to build the stack up regardless of the cost. If they bust, they double-rebuy and try again... eventually most of them will build a stack that is 5x starting chips. You'll often see that these players are half-decent after the rebuy period.

There's a story where Daniel N rebought 30 times in a $1000 rebuy event. He did end up winning it.
