A ridiculous thought?

So I was playing a tournament, as I usually do. And there is a huge donk at the table, as there usually is. He's spewing chips calling down with bottom pair, and I'm hoping for a hand to bust him with.

About 20 hands in I raise his BB with JJ. He calls and we get 10 high, rainbow flop. He had me covered, but I doubled through him as he called my all in on the turn with a gutshot. This left him with 200 or so chips with a t50 BB.

Anyhow, he rebuilt his stack getting lucky until we both hand about 3k. Then, I get involved in another pot with him. I have TPTK and have him covered. He calls me all the way down to the river, leaving himself with only t400 behind.

So I think to myself - Why not let him keep these chips and hopefully he can build up again. He can possibly take out better players doing so, and also accumulate more chips which I can take. So I check and he checks behind, mucking bottom pair (he held 3-5off).

How ridiculous is my line of thinking here?

The actual result, if it means anything: Turns out he did indeed rebuild, catching some good cards and I took about 50% of his average stack before he busted for good.

  • This is similar logic to being a big stack near the bubble and trying to milk your table for as long as possible. It can be effective if you're certain that you won't be moved or he won't be moved, etc. Of course it depends on the stage of the tournament, number of players in the tournament, etc...
  • I would just take his last chips, given that he's a donk it's unlikely that he will rebuild you're just letting someone else take his case chips usually. Might as well just take them while you can I think. Certainly cheer for him in every pot he's involved against other players though, I love when there's one of these guys around getting lucky against everyone but you. (or everyone else is too dumb to realize he's a donk and they try to bluff him).
  • I would have to say i would just take his chips while i could... cause it seems like he is getting lucky against everyone except you... and personally i would rather not take the chance of letting him get lucky against me.
  • If it is a MTT if I am near the chip leader for a table but only average stack overall, I would rather keep around a low stack than risk taking him out and having a monster stack come in his place or having the table broken up. Plus I will know what this guy will do versus the unkown of a new player.

Near the end of the tourney say 3 or 4 tables left and close to the bubble I would rather keep my table 8 or 9 handed say and let the other tables run 6 or 7 handed, which will blind out the players on the other tables faster. If my table is the one that is short handed I will try and push out players so that the table breaks or is rebalanced with players from the other tables.
  • How dare you call me a "DONK"
  • interesting idea, my question is how far do you go to keep him around. If he was allin would you bluff a dry side pot to keep him alive?
