early position, weak top pair w/ace kicker, vs 7 or 8

Say ATs in EP vs 7 or 8 seeing a rainbow flop of 10, 8, 3. Loose 5/10 game.

Do you bet into that? I usually do but unless my hand improves, I inevitably lose to two pair or a higher pair that is made on the turn or river. I'm starting to think I should play it as a drawing hand, hoping for trips or a second pair (board or ace will do).

  • You're most likely ahead in this situation. If I can count on a bet behind me I go for a check raise to make people with K Q or J pay for their top pair draw. Also, you don't want to give someone with J 10 or J9 a free card. If you're not sure if someone will bet behind you then I lead out.

Just because you've had a few bad experiences in this situation doesn't mean you should be less aggressive. I love getting that flop when I have A-10. Most of the time you will win, even if an overcard hits (that is if not everyone sees the turn, in that case you might have to slow down).
  • I agree with the check raise and come out firing on the turn if you get raised slow down.
  • I aggree with the other two replies, this is a great spot to check raise... and bet out on the turn, if you get raise proceed with caution... but with AT and a flop like T 8 3 you definately need to be aggressive.
