Here's a decision I was put to yesterday.
I was driving onto the 401, and had the choice between express and collectors. Now, the highway sign said that express was moving slowly and that collectors was moving well.
So I thought, well, everyone's gonna read that, and go onto the collectors. (Level 1 thinking)
So, would I be better off going onto the express, if everyone else reads that sign and goes onto the collectors, thereby congesting the collectors MORE than the express lanes? (Level 2 thinking)
Or, would everybody ELSE think that too, and go onto the collectors after all, knowing that most people would assume that most people would read the sign and do the opposite of what it recommends? (Level 3 thinking)
What's your play here?
Any feedback appreciated, results to follow.
Pull over to the shoulder, stop your car, get out, and start singing "Everybody Hurts".

You need to decide which way to go based on all the information you can see. Personally, I believe wearing sunglasses will help them from getting a read as to where you may be looking to go. This may help to prevent others from cutting you off making a move to change lanes to get ahead of the rest.
My advise after all of this is, if you are unsure what to do after all these considerations, go with your gut. Your experience driving these roads before will help you to make the better choice in the long run.
There is not enough information, we need to know what time was it when you were driving, were you going east or west, what is your lane position in relation to the other cars, and what is your lane image?
Fair enough.
Time: about 3:00 pm on a Thursday afternoon.
Bearing: West
Lane position: I wasn't in a lane on the 401 yet, I was on the Allan about to get on the 401.
Lane image: tight aggressive
Now that's some good Level 4 thinking.
"So hold on........ hold onnnnnnnnnn........."

(insert clever poker analogy here)
Your level two thinking here is deep enough. Your opponents are not capable of moving past level one thinking.
I suspect that this is the route you took.
the express is faster than kory's ex g/f
No one can put you on Steeles.

Wait a minute, it was snowing all day Thursday. I saw some guy pulled over near
Allen mumbling something about shining his skis...
There's just no way to make this decision without getting a good read. Too many unpredictable drivers who pretty much ignore the road and the signs. And then there's the folks who can't read the signs for various reasons -- can't see, too drunk, actually can't read, etc. etc.
You need to be in the middle lane and wait until you've gone at least a .5 kilometer past the initial fork in the road. Get a good read on how many folks have chosen either side. Then figure out how many were at level 1, 2, 3, 4 thinking. Calculate that in with the number of drivers who haven't seen the sign.Â
Then look up ahead, and see if your calculations are correct.
At the last possible second swerve into the side with less traffic. I love this as it puts the drivers behind me on tilt and gives me an open road ahead. No one wants to get near me and the maniac chasing me -- the one that's going to get even for cutting into traffic. With some skillfull driving you should be able to avert this guy.
If you can't then it will take some more level two thinking. When he pulls up beside you, you calmly open your glove box and start fidgeting around. He of course, thinks you're reaching for your gun and will want to retreat quickly. If he has a gun, well you're pretty much screwed.

Time to change gears. Wratch up the passivity. don't look over.....don't look over....don't look over!
Wader was correct, I went to Level 2, and took the express.
Result: both the express and the collectors were totally f***ed.
They only talk about the very next intersection that is coming up and they make no statement about what traffic is like a few kilometers down the road. So, what you tend to see is: 'Express moving slow, Collectors moving well' around the 400. Problem is that the Express is always heavy upfront and smooth down the road while the collectors is always smooth early and deadly at islington. Collectors is always the worse choice there..
I've come to the conclusion that the only information you can act on are lane closures. Other than that, the two are the same.
