The way a person is dressed does that intimidate you??? Me personally sometimes it does... i have more confidence playing with some kid that comes and sits down with messy hair baggy jeans and t shirt... but when some older guy sits down wearing a suit im a little more cautious... im very agressive either way but it does affect me a little. I come to the table with a sweater and some track pants, Once in awhile ill go to the casino dressed up and i find people play me different when im dressed up compared to lookin like phil laak... JUST WONDERING WHAT YOU GUYS THINK ???

  • I never, ever judge a book by it's cover. It's too easy too fall into a trap. Some players might dress like a slob so you underestimate them, and some players might dress up too make others that they have game.
  • Johnnie is right, never fall into the trap of judging someone based on how they look, dress, smell, talk, or by what type of drink they order at the table. Base it on their skill level.

I once fell into that trap in a pool tournament. Back in the day I used to be a decent pool player, winning alot of small tournaments in bars I went to. In one tournament that I was favoured in my first opponent rolls up in a wheelchair. A wheelchair! I figured it would be a breeze to beat this guy. In no time flat I was out of the tourny. After the game he asked me why I didn't give him my best game like I gave everyone else. I didn't have an answer for him, but he knew why and took advantage of my weakness.
  • The reverse to that is how you dress. I dont know about you but if Im wearing joggers and a ripped Guns & Roses T-shirt it does something to me mentally. If I'm well dressed I feel better and in my mind if I'm feeling better I'll play better.

    Note: This doesn't include online.

I hear you. Wearing a GNR shirt always puts me into a Zen-like mental state.

It seems like everywhere I end up going, the grass is green and the girls are pretty.

Don't you cry tonight, sweet child of mine. Only a couple more weeks, and you'll get the scalding hot December snow you've been waiting for. Just have a little patience. Yeaaaaaa-aaah.

    LMAO. Way to go Axl.
  • I make all sorts of judgements about how people will tend to play based upon their clothes.

Generally, our clothes are our uniform. We identify ourselves as belonging to a certain group by wearing "the uniform" of the group we want to be associatted with. Business person? Power suit (black is the current colour). Angry left wing college student? Used clothes and army surplus (I was one once, by the way).

How does this effect my poker game? I start to make judgements about my opponents the moment they sit down. I am careful not to "judge a book by it's cover" but the cover is one element of the whole package. 22 year old, loud, cocky, hat on backwards -- it is *likely* that he overvalues his skill and undervalues the effect of luck. It is likely that he bluffs too much. Watch and confirm. Or, watch and note that my first judgement is wrong.

The point is that one should use whatever evidence they have at their disposal. So, with no other information I will make some decisions based on my opponents' appearance.
  • I'm not sure if it's the same everywhere, but last time I was in Vegas, the 3 worst players I encountered were all wearing sunglasses at the table.  I realize that they may be of advantage at high limits or serious tournaments where the other players can actually see tells, but playing 2/4 at the Green Valley Ranch or 1-3 spread at the Excalibur, you just look like a tool.  The one guy dropped over $400 in 3 hours at 2/4.  The full extent of his poker experience was obviously from watching Celebrity poker challenge on Bravo.

I always chuckle when I see sunglasses in the 1-2 game.
