GBH – Tournament Report - Part one
GBH – Tournament Report
Yesterday I played in the $200 + $40 re-buy event at the Great Blue Heron Casino. When I went to register last month the tournament was full so I was put on the waiting list. I had number 11 on the list.
The tournament started at 10:20 and they have to give people that paid and didn’t show 15 minutes grace for their payment. I got seat 4 of the 7 seats that were available. After doing the paperwork that was needed I was seated at table 5 seat 4 at 10:50. I had only missed one round of antes and was under the gun (UTG) plus one. My stack was 1850.
Having played this tournament many times before I only recognized 3 players at my table. The others were new to me. The first hand I played was UTG with two black queens. The blinds were 50 – 100 and I raised to 250. Everyone folded. This being only my second hand at the table, I did not have a read on anyone at the table. I looked around at the stacks that were at my table and noticed that it looked like no one had gone broke yet. The biggest stack at the table was in the 3 to 4 K range. I had to remind myself that this was a re-buy tournament. Every time someone raised, everyone else folded. Man what a tight table. I was sitting there with a bunch of people that didn’t want to loose any money! I started praying to the poker gods to give me some playable hands. For the next 20 minutes all I saw was garbage, K2, J6 and so on. An example of how tight the table was is with the blinds now 100-200 I was in middle position with AQh. Two people in front of me had limped in, I took my time with what I was going to bet and the person to my left acted out of turn and also called. I raised to 800, the dealer made him leave the bet in and he folded. Everyone else folded too. Last hand of the re-buy period, I had 99 near the button. Again two limpers and I raised. Everyone folded. End of the re-buy period I have 2900 in chips. I was regretting not taking the re-buy right away.
Sitting down after the first break, I was hoping to be moved to a looser table. The table I was at was going to be the first to get closed. Not being able to accumulate chips in the first hour was going to be tough when I finally got moved to a new table. Half way through the level of 200-400 our table was closed and I was moved to table 3. This table was going to be the third last table to be closed. The first thing I noticed that everyone had bigger stacks than I did. Rubbing my hands together I need to get to work. I stole the blind once in middle position with 4 6 suited with a 3x the BB raise. The next hand I played was AK of diamonds in end position. A player 2 to my right opened for 3x the blind and I had 3400 in chips. I pushed over the top. He hesitated in calling but did. He had KK. Ouch! I sucked out an A on the flop and now had 7400 chips. Two hands later I raised in middle position with JJ to 1600 chips and was re-raised by the button. When it came back to me I pushed in. He had AK off and he never improved. My chips were now around 15,500. The next blind level I had 10,10 when a player 3 to my right raised to 1600. I called and saw a flop. The flop came Q, 7, 4, a rainbow. The raiser made a bet of 2000. I thought I had a good read on him so I re-raised to 6500. He thought for a while and folded show me a pair of 9s. Did not play any more hands till after the second break. End of the second hour my chips are around 17500

Secondly,
HUH? Why do you need playable hands to accumulate chips at this table?
Good luck the rest of the way!
