My 1st B& M Experience

So I finally got the courage to try out the 3-6 tables at Club Regent. I haven't played a limit game in a few months, it's always been No-limit tourny home games, but what the hell I thought, I have a free night, I'm going to have some fun.

I got to the casino around 6:00pm Saturday night. I went straight down to the lower level where the poker tables are. There were two tables only, both were full. I put my name down, I was 6th on the waiting list.
After waiting about 20 minutes, they opened a new table, they called my name and my experience was about to begin!

I brought $200 with me, but decided to only buy in $120. My table was full, I noticed that 7 out of the 9 other players at the table all knew each other by first name as well as the dealers and the waitress. My first thought was whoa, I think I'm out of my league, these guys must play everyday!

The dealer then deals for the button. I'm big blind in the 1st hand.
4 hands later I'm dealt AQo. I raise it. Flop comes Qxx. I bet, everyone folds, I win my first hand! Woohoo!

Later on I'm dealt AKo. There's a raise in front, I raise it again. 4 players in the pot. Flop comes Axx. I bet and everyone folds. I'm starting to notice that these guys are rocks, very tight! I think I got dealt AK 5-6 times, AQ 2-3 times, I won every single one!

My more memorable hands now :D. I'm the button and get dealt JcTc, I raise it. There's 3 callers. Flop brings Ac2d8c. Everyone checks, so I bet. Only 1 caller left. Turn comes Kc. Player bets, and I raise. he calls. River comes rag and player checks, I bet, he calls. I show my flush, he also has a flush but it's lower. He told me later he thought I had AK and thought his flush was good. That raise pre-flop really helped me get more money :)

Again on the button, I'm dealt bullets. I raise, and the BB raises again, so I tap it out and raise, we're heads up. Flop comes Axx, flopped a set! BB bets, I raise (thought about slow playing, but figured I'll see what type of player this guy is), he calls. Turn brings a rag, he checks, I bet, he calls. River brings a rag, he checks, I bet, he calls. I show him my set, he shows me KK. I wondered to myself, why did he hold onto KK when there's an Ace on the board? Did he really think they were good, considering the way I bet? Ah well, I shouldn't complain, he paid me pretty good.

Worst hand of my night, lost a lot of my profits on it. Kc7c in the BB. No raise pre-flop so I'm playing this one. 7 guys preflop. Flop comes T47. Ok, middle pair. I check, someone bets, I decide to call and so does one other person. So there's 3 of us left. Turn comes another 7. I have trips, but decide to check. 2nd guy checks as well. 3rd guys bets, I call, and the 2nd guy raises and now so does the 3rd guys, so they tapped out the betting. I call it thinking my King kicker should be fine. River brings a 4. So I have a full house. I decide to check and call, the previous betting round scared me into thinking someone may have a pocket that hit, but the way the betting went preflop and flop, I had doubts and thought my full house was good. 2nd guys bets, 3rd guy raises, I call, 2nd guy raises again, 3rd guy raises and taps it. I call :(. 2nd guy shows TT, 3rd guys shows a 4 (this guys really screwed me over with his betting) I show my 7. Yuck. The guy with the TT was the same guy who had KK when I had my bullets, I joked with him that he was getting me back for the aces.

Great night though, I will definitely be back. I took home an extra $61 in just under 3 hours. Tipped the dealer a few times and a couple of rakes, I put my self winning about $75. I played very tight even throwing away 89s, 9Ts, 9Js at times. Maybe next time I'm there, a few of those guys will remember my name.

  • Congrats on making cash on your first visit. If you can keep beating them and keep tipping the dealers, I guarantee they'll all remember your name. lol
  • Congrats on your first time out.

I've been playing at Regent for the last three years or so. Granted I don't get there often because of where I live, but I can be found there everytime I go out on business (every couple of months or so).

I find that there are a few solid players at Regent, several maniacs, some regular fishes, a couple of foxes and quite a few Bellagio Wannabes. You will come to know them all.

Don't let any of the Wannabes put you off your game. These are the guys who are always critiquing everyone else's game but for some reason don't put an eye on their own. You could say that they have Annie Duke/Phil Helmuth syndrome.

Just watch for the good tables, every now and then you get a table so prime for the picking that you think you died and went to heaven. I find showing up for a the later tables is better, the main is normally full of tight regulars.

Again, congrats, and hopefully we'll meet next time I'm down.

    Mike

lol... next time call ahead (I think before 6pm) and book a seat at the 8pm table openings. They start to open the other tables at 8pm and you get mostly the tourists at these tables. Last time I was there at table 5 and I had 3 young guys (early 20's, possibly even just 20) sit down and one of them asked how the game was played *slurp* it was awesome! :D
  • Good to know! I'm busy this weekend, but hopefully soon we can go for a run!
