Question about betting and raising

Please help me in answering this question

Last night I was playing a 6 man poker tournament starting with $1000.00 in chips. After playing for some time and raising the blinds every 15 mins, we where down to 2 players heads up and blinds where $300 and $600. Pre-flop I raised making it $500 to go. Is this a legal bet? I was told that I would have to raise at least twice the big blind amount pre-flop. This would mean that my raise would have to be to $600 instead of $500. Can anyone tell me if this is correct?

  • Ya. If the BB is 600, a min raise would take it to 1200. If you are all-in you can raise for less...
  • Yeah, that's it plain and simple.
  • In tourneys, the min. bet (raise) is usually the BB.

The minimum bet is the big blind. The minimum raise is the amount of the previous aggressive action (i.e. the previous bet or raise). Posting the big blind is also considered an aggressive action in terms of this rule.

Players being allowed to go all-in supercedes either of these rules.

These rules apply to both cash games and and tournaments.

And MickeyHoldem, no, they don't do it correctly at Akwesasne. :)

  • Be sure to check the rules and regulations of the casino/poker room you are playing in. For example, as ScottyZ stated,
The minimum raise is the amount of the previous aggressive action
. However, for example, at Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort, on a No Limit cash game, all raises must be equal to, or greater than two times (2X) what the player to your left as has acted up to. (?!?).

BB is $10....UTG raises to $20....in most casinos/poker rooms, MP can re-raise to $30. However, at NFCR, MP would be obligated to go to at least $40, or twice what UTG has invested in front of him.
