  • Sorry I got distracted by your avatar.  It's almost hypnotic.  Tried to read your message about 5-6 times.  Something about bowling I believe.  Finally gave up and just watched the avatar. :D

Also noticed that the googlie eyes of the happy face move slower when your avatar shares the screen.  He must be watching the avatar too!

Now I have to go and search for all your other posts too...

  • Curious... this sounds interesting. How do they legaly get away with running a cash tournament? Is there a tournament charge, ie rake?Is the entire $20. entry returned as prize money? What's the catch?
  • there is no catch...there is no rake..there is no charge to get in

    its all good fun

the bar is dead so this is what they needed to get it booming, its working cause there sales have went up alot.

check it out tomorrow night and you will see what its about
  • How long does this tourney last? ie how aggressive are the blinds?

    till like 12ish

blinds are rasied every 20 mins
  • $20 fee to play and cash games on the side - sounds illegal to me! Are the Hamilton police as aggressive as the Kitchener-Waterloo police in enforcing Ontario's restrictive gambling laws?

  • Please explain to me how this is any less legal than a pool tournament?

    Ryan
  • Ryan, it is obviously illegal, it is just a question of whether or not the local law enforcement chooses to look the other way. Ontario Gaming laws are failry well known... This being said, Ii and a few friends played in this event on Friday. It was very well run and we will be back..
  • Obviously?

Clearly you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

Pool tournaments run by bars are not illegal. I see no reason why there would be a difference in poker tournaments, *as long as the house isn't taking a cut* which they aren't. If this tournament was shut down, every pool tournament in the city would also have to be shut down. And if that were to happen (even if it was illegal) I'd certainly have to question the way my tax dollars were being spent in terms of policing.

    Ryan
  • Oh, one suggestion for the people running this tournament:

When a table gets down to a low number of people, it's a good idea to disperse those players amongst other tables rather than just joining 2 tables together. This happened near the end of the tournament and my table was stuck playing 4 handed when there was still 20 people left. Not really ideal.

    Ryan
  • Well Ryan, this has been discussed numerous times before and while you may think the comparison of a pool tournament of other such games of skill are similar to poker tournaments they definitely are not, at least in the eyes of the Ontario Lottery & Gaming commision. The difference is the element of "chance" or "luck" involved in poker...  Now this being said, I am an avid poker player, both tournament and cash games and have played in many underground games, casino locals both, here and in Vegas, nothing I would like better than to have poker legalized here, other than in casinos. However that is not likely to happen unless we can put enough pressure on our government to change the laws. And you should question the way your tax dollars are being spent, I certainly do.

    Hi Kettle.  Why so black?
  • As for the legalities of what the Bowling Alley are doing I guarantee you what they are doing is in deed illegal. When I held my tournament for a Cause I enlisted my brother (who is a lawyer) and his wife (who as well, is a lawyer) into finding out just what is legal and what isn't. Here is why the event at the Bowling alley is ILLEGAL:

    1) Despite not taking a rake...they are still profiting on the sale of food and liquor, which is against the law. You can not profit in any way from gambling if you are hosting/holding the event

    2) Beacuse of this events regularity in the same location, the bowling aley would be classified as a "common gaming house" meaning the owners would be running a commo gaming house and the participants would be patrons in a common gaming house.

If busted the participants would be looking at a ticket in the neighbourhood of a hundred bucks. the bowling alley would most likely lose its liquor license and be fined tens of thousands of dollars.
  • how many people were there on friday? i couldint make it
  • Think it was 66...
  • not bad at all
  • Witchdoctor, again by this definition pool tournaments are illegal (which they're not, and I've talked to police about this). It is "gambling" and the restaurants and bars are profiting off liquor sales.

    Ryan
  • Pool tournament don't have the stigma that poker has. I agree with you it is BS but that is the way it is. I've played in Baseball tournaments were there are money prizes, it doesn't seem any different to me.
  • It is true....Billiards is considered a sport and poker is considered a game of chance by the law!!!
  • Well surely you would have to admit that there is much more of an elemnt of "chance" in poker than pool, especially in the short term.
  • If busted the participants would be looking at a ticket in the neighbourhood of a hundred bucks.  the bowling alley would most likely lose its liquor license and be fined tens of thousands of dollars.
Does anybody know if this has happened in Ontario? I have read of many minor infractions where the establishment would get their liquor license suspended when customers smuggled in their own liquor or gambled among themselves, but I'm surprised at the number of establishments that are risking their small business "all in" by hosting illegal cash games.

Air Canada Centre will lose hundreds of thousands of dollars after being caught with violations yet again. They will not be allowed to sell any liquor for three future concerts.
