Who knows their spiders?

I have this huge spider camping outside my front door.

My first instint is to roll up a newspaper and squash the thing, but I want to know what I am smooshing first.

It looks like a small mushroom, with spiky legs, and it has huge pincers on the front of its head which is under its body.

i can't find my good digital camera, or else I would take a picture.

Help me.

  • Google knows everything.

Here's a page with pictures of a bunch of spiders. Is your visitor among them?

BTW, if spiders make you squeamish, please move along. Nothing to see here.

if i saw that outside my door i'd freak out
  • Unfortunately it looks alot like the brown widow.

    Except it's legs are shorter.
  • found my camera

  • Might also be the Shamrock Orb Weaver. Note the striped pattern on the legs.

Although the Brown Widow does have a similar look, according to that website it "is an introduced species in the United States and is found mainly in the tropical states".

  • I have GOT to show my daughter these pics when she gets back from camp. She is going to absolutely FREAK OUT :D

But to answer your original post, just whack the thing dead....THEN find out what you killed.

Isn't that what ALL mass murders do? Or just me??
  • I think the real question is....how does the spider do at the poker table????

No matter what I'm holding, I'd fold against a spider. If I beat him, hey may bite.
  • Yes, but after the bite, you may gain new super human powers that will warn you against folding top pair when you're against an aggressive opponent. Or maybe it will signal you to play the flop with 72o this time.

Hey, it can happen. I saw the movie!! :D

This actually looks like the exact same spider I had camping outside my house when I lived in Ontario, probably close to 10 years ago now.  We couldn't identify it, and neither could the university lab.

So, good luck with that :)

If I saw this outside my door, I'd MOVE!
  • I think playiing one of these spiders would be great....I heard spiders have very definite tells. They usually start spinning a web when they are holding the nuts, and they rub their legs together when they are bluffing. Think I read this in SS2.
  • Use it as your card protector - no dealer will accidently swipe your cards from you.....more than once
  • I believe Scotty is right, you've got yourself a Shamrock Orb Weaver, common in this area...and tasty with hot sauce!
  • This is easly the creepiest thread I have ever seen. (Cringe)

ps..Thanks Big E, I was going to have some microwave popcorn & Franks Hot Sauce, but now I think I'm going to be sick. That spider and the popcorn look very similar.
  • Now you don't know if the popcorn is gooey from the hot sauce or not eh Johnnie!!!!! I think another name for these spiders is the popcorn spider?
