If I fold will you show me what you got?

I've seen this asked a couple of times and been asked it once, I said yes, he called and I won, wondering what sort of responses you folks give in what circumstances and if you ever ask it yourself? Is it a helpful read on someone who asks this? Someone who responds?

  • If you want a call, say "No way!" Otherwise, I think you just have to smile.

I rarely show my cards. Maybe if my opponent is pretty weak but trying to learn. I'm certainly not going to help a tough opponent.

I love it when guys show me their cards when I make a tough fold. Lots of free info.
  • I once answered this by saying "I will if you raise me" Needless to say, he folded and I didn't show him. I wasn't bluffing really, but I do think he might have had me beat on that particular hand. I was chip leader and playing pretty aggressively at the time.

One reason a player will ask is to listen and watch you as you respond. Body language, tone of voice, eye contact...all communicate to him more than your words ever will, so be careful. It's probably much safer to just sit quiet and let him make up his mind on his own.
  • If asked, I usually respond, I will show them if you call. To which they say..well you would have to! Then I smile.
  • if i want someone to go away i say "i'll show you one, and i'll let you pick"

this serves a purpose, as it will satisfy his urge to gamble

i think there was thread disscussing this a few months back
    some good responses in there
  • If angling is not allowed, I immediately ask the dealer to kill the gentlemans hand. If he wont, I go over his head and get the floor person and ask that his hand be killed. If that doesnt work, I ask the dealer to put my opponent on the clock. If that doesnt work, I put on my sunglasses, because god knows, that is the super force field the prevents all players from seeing into my soul.
  • Pervert!

I would not pull down my pants at the poker table for anybody!

Unless of course Angelina Jolie said that she would show me her Whatchamacallit if I showed her my Big Turk!

Online, I pretend that my chat suddenly stopped working.

Live, I pretend that my mouth has suddenly stopped working.

I think I have the 'suspended animation' look down enough now that little, if any body language is given away.
  • I thought about this once. From what I thought. If the person responded with YES, he may have a weak have he is willing to show to get the other person to fold. If he response NO, he possibly has a good hand and wants the other person to call and then show.
  • When I hear that I instantly think - this poor sucker is out of position and/or holding weak cards. Cha Ching. My answer is always "5 to call, 10 to raise".

Anybody ever answer yes and then have the guy raise or call? Didn't think so.
  • Just because I take any opportunity to use my favourite line.

I'm like a hooker and will only show for dough!

Sometime after the hand, I then add "I'm really like a hooker, I'll screw anyone for money!"

    Cheers
