Annie talks about Dave
I hope this isn't too 'gossipy'... I don't mean it to be. Annie's gutshot interview is making waves in the poker community, as we all know. RGP is up in arms about 'snotty professionals' and 'hard-working, skilled amateurs'. I watched the Annie interview, and after reading Dave's report I can only conclude that she's talking about our own Dave Scharf.
Awesome.
Like I said, I don't mean to gossip or anything, but Dave is, like, famous. Annie goes on and on about the poor play of her opponents that led to her demise, and in one hand she's talking about Dave. She says:
"I got up to 120, I took a beat with kings where a guy called on the turn for the pot with a jack high straight draw, which again is very bizarre, and he hit it. I bet the river and he flat-called which was kinda strange but...."
I have to interject: Maybe Dave flat called because there was a pair on the board????????? Annie continues:
"I got kinda crippled by that hand and then I had another bad hand in between"
I have to interject: Maybe this other 'bad hand' is the one where Dave semi-bluffed you for mostly your whole stack with Qs8s? No details about that one, though... the largest of her 'beats'... Annie continues:
"There's a lot of inexperienced players; I mean, a good player wouldn't have called with a jack-high straight draw. And particularly with jack high I mean it's not like he had an ace high straight draw and could win with something or a pair and a straight draw..."
etc.
I like her careful omissions. She doesn't mention the fact that Dave was on a big stack, and could afford to gamble. She doesn't mention the fact that it was in Dave's best interest to try to bust her specifically out. And of course, she doesn't mention the big hand where she just plain got outplayed.
Dave Scharf is fast becoming a man for the people.

I have lost all respect for her.
ScottyZ
she sucks
I think that's a nice analogy, and a great point.
How has the game of poker degraded to such a point where all of this belly-aching and grotesquely poor sportsmanship is generally accepted as commonplace and possibly even tolerated?
It's like poker has turned into something like the WWE and it's *not* an act.
ScottyZ
She told things as she saw it. We all do. Yes, even Dave Scharf.
IMHO, Jim
GO DAVE GO!!
Fair enough. What she said could be taken as just stating facts... I got the sense listening to her though that she was not just stating facts.
I guess the thing that bugged me was that she went on (and on) (and on) about how there are so many 'not good' players (she never said bad), but she didn't hold herself accountable at all. Which is fine, if every pot you played you got outdrawn by an inferior hand, but Dave's Qs8s semi-bluff took a lot of her chips.
In fact, I'd say that with the pot that big, it was the key hand of her tournament, but yet she chose not to mention it at all.

Hey Annie, might you be a little wrong on the asumption he was an amatuer, The"other bad hand" was an amazing play on Dave's part. That hand should have told you then and there he's a guy to be wary of. And to slack it off as a bad hand will haunt your play forever. Make the adjustment, do not keep players in a box. Yes type cast them but change it as you see fit. Rocks can become maniacs in a lap on the table. Adjust to the play.
I can understand this. But we all know that poker doesn't always attract class. Case and point would be Phil Hellmuth. Do I hate Phil Hellmuth? Not really; I don't know him. Do I find his antics annoying? Sometimes. Do I find his antics amusing? Sometimes.
In fact, I'd say that with the pot that big, it was the key hand of her tournament, but yet she chose not to mention it at all.
We've all been hit by "selective amnesia". Perhaps she has some deep psychological need to feel superior. Who knows.
Cheers, Jim
Lol, true enough. I'm sure this happened once or twice a few years ago:
I return home from a casino after a losing night of 10/20 hold'em.
g/f: "How'd you do, honey?"
me: "Ummm, OK... I guess I broke even I'm not sure...."
OR
me: "My pocket jacks got cracked that hand"
friend: "any overcards on the board?"
me: "no"
Lol.
But, I've become a lot more honest about good play/bad play and good results/bad results since then. One would think that if I can by now honestly recount hands (both good and bad) to friends after a night of poker, Annie should be able to do the same when talking about major hands in the biggest tournament in the world.
As for Hellmuth, I'm glad he is the way he is. Someone has to be, and let's face it, the poker world wouldn't be the same without him...

Had to agree and like one and hate the other.
Me i have always liked both of them, apart of course.
Now All Aces seems to have started up World Annie War 2.
On this board that gives 0 chance in hell of her getting any respect.
Although she belittles the amateur inexperienced players in that interview she is not stupid. She doesn't mention names although she surely knew them. As for Dave I am quite certain she knows Dave and respects his play. There were however soo many rookie players this year who truly were bad players. Dave did not fit this group, and Annie knows that just as much as the rest of us here.
One thing i disagree with from her interview is the fact that only 100 name players were here to play.
I am not Annie Duke and I have not played but 1 event with more than a few name players. Poker is quite big the past few years and the name players have grown in numbers. I could tell you something about at least 400 players who played in this big one.
That was not my intent, and I genuinely apologize to anyone who is offended by anything in this thread.
The reason I posted all this is because I guess I thought it was very cool that Annie Duke (a well-known pro) was talking about Dave Scharf (a lesser-known player who we all kind of know and definitely respect). If she had said nice things about Dave, I'm sure I would have posted about that as well.
I'm not a mean-spirited person. However, I may be too easily star-struck. Not with Hollywood stars, though... just Pokerstars.
Once again, sorry about the Annie-bashing. My original post was motivated by the attention Dave was getting, and maybe I could have focused more on the positive aspects of that attention.

Hey, maybe people should send much of the blame or credit (depending on your point of view) for this my way.
Just to be clear, my Annie-ranting wasn't really based on all_aces (or anyone's) posts here--- my reactions were almost entirely based on watching her gutshot.co.uk post-WSOP interview.
ScottyZ
Well then, blame ScottyZ!!! Glad that's settled... to quote Philip Seymour Hoffman from Punch Drunk Love: "That's that".
A random photo of the mattress man never hurts.
In future, I plan on referring to anything involving Annie Duke at the 2004 WSOP as 'Anniegate'.
