Five Finger Check List
Hi Dave, I just read your article on your "Five Finger Check List". For those that haven't read it the jist of it is to help Dave with his decision making in no limit tournies. His five questions are as follows:
1) Big Pot or Small Pot?
2) What's he got?
3) What will he do with it?
4) What is the consquence of being wrong?
5) Has the monkey brain gone blank?
I think these process is something that would help improve my game. As I am a fairly competent golfer, I see it as a preshot routine. Before I hit any golf shot I run thru a mental checklist, then pull the trigger.
Dave in your article you mention that your "checklist' has changed over time. I would be interested in what you would propose to a relatively new poker player (i.e. 25k ring game hands at .25/.50 and .50/1.00 limit, 25k SNG hands in 1 yr of online poker)? Also I would be interested in what questions others ask themselves prior to making a poker decision. Looking forward to your responses.
Thanks
Jay

1) Where does my overlay come from against THIS opponent? (i.e. what error is he prone to make0.
2) What's he got? A specific hand, not a range.
3) What will he do with it?
4) What is the consquence of being wrong?
5) Has the monkey brain gone blank?
If I go back to the "good old days" I think thinking it was
(1) What is my position?
(2) What is the action that has come before me?
(3) What cards can I play/do I have?
(4) What flop do I want to see?
(5) What box do I have this opponent in?
In truth, for me, poker boils down to: "What's he got and what will he do with it?"
