Staying focused

For the players that play in 8+ hour tournaments, how do you manage to keep focused and alert towards the end? I find that after that long, I get that exhausted feeling and start playing badly. How do you manage to keep on top of your game after hours and hours? What can one do to improve in that aspect?

I am always trying to put people on hands in tournaments. I like to analize how much they bet with what cards. I often do the WWID (What would I do) when I'm out of a hand. I imaging holding different cards, and analizing my virtual play against my opponent.

I also am constantly doing chip tricks. My shoulder and wrist actually ache the next day after a tournament.

Thats a great work injury... I should go to a chiropractor, and tell him I have poker chip elbow :D
  • I know that this sounds very cliche, but I listen to music. If I know I am going to be sitting for long periods of time, I make sure to bring something that is going to keep me awake. Also watching for tells. It is imparative to watch what happens everytime a hand is seen through. Seeing what cards your opponents have is no good, if you weren't paying attention to how they were playing them.
  • i think the more you do it, the better you get. You realize that you "have to stay focused" or else your out. That might just be incentive enough......... I'm with the school of watching your opponents, who folds easy, who likes to bluff reraise etc.
  • Thanks for the advice...you are right, it is getting better with more experience.
