Degree Poker Starting Thursday at 8pm TSN

Any players from the tournament around?

I look forward to making an ass out of myself on national TV tomorrow night :) Not in an Arieh kind of way though thankfully.

  • I was in this, same round as 7-Deuce, our games on at 9pm.

    When is yours on JustToast?
  • Im in yours actually guys... haha... it's Cal.

ALLL i'm concerned about is if I said something stupid in the interviews.. haha... :)

Any details on whether we can get a pass back in this year?
  • And how did you get that still capture that's on your blog, deuce?
  • What are some of your names to watch for on their so that we can put faces to your forum names?
It just makes things more exciting if you sort of know somebody on t.v.

    Rob = 7-deuce
    Ian = ion storm
    Cal = me

That's Playoff #2 at 9pm EST for all of us.
  • hahahaha
Man that was some funny shit.

And they called me Craig, finally they got it right.
  • Man! They disappeared me after benham and didnt' show even one hand... bloody wankers. I got all nervous for nothing! haha.

Nice show you put on Rob/Craig/Deucey... haha... Ian too... though the commentators were AWFUL and made hardly a whimper about that straight flush.

They certainly liked Jedi's fist pump. My overall impression is that we weren't lively enough and their commentators weren't good enough to make it interesting outside of all-ins. Landsburg seems to not even know how to play poker or what hands are good... scary.

Oh well, fun to see ourselves on TV at least.
  • I was also surprised that they didnt show at least one hand involving yourself JustToast.

they comentating was not great, there were a few errors, as well as some of the %s for hands being way off.

I was kinda glad they didnt use my interview, didnt really want to see what they would use.

Other then that I enjoyed watching the broadcast, and the whole degree poker was a great experience and tons of fun. I was pretty nervous before watching myself on TV 2night though.
  • ya they cut it down so much, they didn't even show some of the guys go out....they came back from commercial and 2 were gone I was like wah...
  • I have only watched the first playoff so far, and oh my goodness, someone get that commentator dude a coffee and an adrenalin shot. He was HORRIBLE!!!! Really ruined the show for me. Watching poker can be paint drying without some well-timed lines and oomph in the commentary.

It was cool to see a buncha canucks, though, and that last hand was hilarious. FH over the Flush and I didn't even realize it because he was still sad when they showed his face, lol.
  • I want to hear some "AND HE'S CAUGHT LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE... THE RAREST OF HANDS, THE STRAIGHT FLUSH!!!"... i want excitement damn you

I think you should all nominate me to commentate next year...

    HAH.

Bleh.. I was at the movies tonight and my VCR was set for 2006. I'm Paul.

I can only wish that I was one of the guys who they didn't show go out.. but I think Ian's slowplay probably deserved some airtime.

So aside from Landsberg who was doing commentary?

lol.. you edited out that part about A7 off.. pretty funny. It's pretty unfortunate having a brain cramp be televised.

I meant the playoff #1... but then i realized you got burned on the turn with the same hand so thought it was in bad taste. I busted with 9Ts boys :)
  • Heh.. that's so .. tactful of you ;) I really should have been able to get away from that hand, but Fernando's incessant raising made it hard to play any hands, so I took 'le stand' at the wrong time!

I saw part of the first round at a bar tonight.. It was interesting to me that they chose to post last names rather than first names.

It's kind of funny that it's just the 4 of us on these forums from the same playoff.. haven't really heard from anyone else.

We should have some online SNG or something for old time sakes.. heh.
  • Private Message me your party names/msn/email and maybe we'll set something up guys.

I agree completely about fernando, but that's exactly why he's a good player... all his raising hands tonight he had nice cards though... and Vinny in #1 was not shown to be the force that he actually was at the table either. Frankly, Fernando picked up half my stack because I was trying to play back at him with the crappy cards I was getting. Interesting to note that Kelly's all-in was JJ not AA as was suspected.

Fernando was in my opinion the best player at our table. Anyone think differently?
  • Here are my comments as an uninvolved viewer.

    1) TSN's broadcast was horrible.  The production values were even worse than the Canadian and European Poker Tour shows.  All active hands should be shown on the screen instead of making viewers clueless.  The graphics should be made smaller so they don't block the whole screen.

    2) The colour commentator needs to keep in mind that most viewers are not poker gamblers and may not be familiar with poker jargon.  Poker terms used should be explained in the first show.  I don't remember any explanation of hand rankings and how poker is played.

    3) Poker shows should stop calling the playing the players only by their first name then showing only their surname with the cards.  For example, the commentators would keep referring to John but you don't know if they are talking about the cards of Doe or Blow.

    4) Craig McRae (spelling?) was the star of the second show.  His Jim Carrey personality at least made the horribly-produced show slightly entertaining.
  • If I hadn't met and played at various tourneys against Ian, I couldn't have watched the show.
The production value was that low.

That being said, must have been a great experience. Congrats again on a good showing.
  • I have to agree, the announcing for the show was not good. There just wasnt enough life and chemistry between landsberg and the "expert". After I watched the first round I told my girlfriend if I wasnt in the 2nd round I likely wouldnt even bother watching.

It was a great experience though, and I would love to play again next year, everyone should try to the tourney is tons of fun. As well TSN/Degree treated us very well for the days we spent in Niagra falls. Hopefully they can take some comments from this years shows and improve on next years.

I originally thought Fernando was very good, but after seeing the few hands he played on TV last night it didnt seem he was doing anything overly tricky, and his big raises shown were with big cards. So I am not sure anymore.
  • Overall, for the first show done by Landsberg and company, it wasn't all that terribly bad... Ok, yes it was, but it could have been worse. :D

I think Landsberg downplayed his poker knowledge for the benefit of having to explain poker terms etc. But I haven't seen so many "missed" hands ever. The one guy getting a flush on the river and whooping it up, while the other guy got a boat on the same card and thinking he was beat and getting all dejected, it took the announcers a few seconds to realize it to. I think the only person on the ball was the dealer, who immediately showed the full house as the winning hand. It was only after that that the players realized it too.
  • Landsburg has to go. He was brutal. You're right they did have %'s wrong a couple of times. Was it Benham left of Oliviero, anyway i was glad to see that guy go. I could tell he thought he should have ran away with this thing, looking GQ and all. Also Peter Baker with his shirt unbuttoned to his belly button, had to laugh at him as well. I like that one guys interview about how he fluked his way this far, i like his honestly. But that was exposed by his call to be all in.

But congrats for being on the t.v. guys. Well done.

    7-2o all in??????????
  • Hey Blonde thx for enjoying me lol I thought I made the show entertaining at least haha, man I am a crazy person :)
    Craig Macrae btw close
And yes my infamous 7-2 off hand lol, why do that? well they didn't explain it very well on how short stacked I was, but yes it an insane move.
To be honest i thought I was big and he was small, then when I saw it on tv I went wow I am crazy.
  • The third show tonight was the worst produced yet. I couldn't tell who was who, what cards who held, who was winning as the cards were being turned, etc., etc. The pacing and editing were terrible. I see the grandmother appearing to win a hand, then it seemed like she disappeared into the Niagara gorge without any explanation. :D

TSN needs to pay attention to the World Poker Tour on how to produce a poker show. I think the action is taped before the commentators do their job, but it seems as if they are making boring comments live with no edits. Did the players here ever see Landsberg preparing to comment live or was he even at the event? Craig "The Cable Guy" Macrae and "The Jedi Master" :D are the only things I can remember from the three horribly-produced shows.

On the older lady, she was a feature interview before the commercial and afterwards she was just gone. No mention of when or how she busted out.

Landsberg showed up for an event for all the playoff qualifiers, but it was clear that all the commentary was post-production. When we talked to him, he suggested they were trying to get Negreanu to do the commentary.

A lot of people have complained about how cramped the screen looks.. has anyone actually seen it in HDTV?
  • I just watched the episode that Ian was in.

I started the tournament against the the guy that won it. I have to admit that he had horse shoes up his a__ as he was just brutal at the first two tables we played at.

He was always making bad calls and catching.

    BTW, Ian nice straight flush.
  • To be honest yes I have permanently put a horse shoe up there so I can continue my streak.
  • did u guys get makeup and stuff put on you?
  • I watched the 1st show but found it too painful to watch the others..
