"Well, you never know"

As I gear up for my annual fishing trip next week, I remember last year's poker games and start to think about how I will combat the different styles you see at the table.

It should be noted that all events begin after dinner, which is usually around 8-9, after an entire day of drinking beer. Lots of beer. This pattern repeats every day. This also explains why I don't recall any sepecifc details besides this one I am about to discuss.

4 of 5 players left, 3 including my Dad limp to the BB (my fishing buddy) who raises all in (I don't know chip counts). He has has my Dad covered. All fold to Dad, who thinks for a minute, then says "Well, you never know. I'll call" and flips over 94 os.

Alas, this hand knocked him out and he got to go to bed. It was damn late. But in the interest of learning, what shall I do to combat this kamikazee "Hanson-like" player? I mean besides drink less, so I remember what cards I'm holding. Should I move up in limits and play people who know what an "out" is? Is it possible to isolate a guy who limps into every hand and calls every re-raise? Should I have learned not to bluff him after the 6th attempt?

The phrase "Well, you never know" has a new meaning to my fishing buddy and I. We use all the time and it's always good for a laugh. Seriously, I think my Dad should put out a DVD complete with commentary and thought process. It would be a hoot!

I finished out of the money in every single tournament by the way. I am the only guy who plays regularly too. I can't recall if my play was bad or unlucky, but no doubt it was both.

  • The main thing to do is learn how to take his money 9 out of 10 times when your hand is good....

btw - this is not "Hansen-esque" His style is see a lot of cheap flops and trap when his rags hit the flop. Not calling away all his chips as an underdog.
  • Hey thanks for the tip! This post was not a serious one. I don't really need tips on how to beat my Dad.

And Gus makes a lot of crazy calls as well.

And those crazy calls seem to work out well for him a lot of the time too... I swear it's true what they say, the game of Hold'em rewards aggressive play.
