My WCOOP Event #4 bust out hand :(

Fresh from defeat… here is my WCOOP Event #4, Pot Limit 6 handed, bust out hand.

This is right before the second break.  Approximately 1,000 players remaining from an initial field of 2,345.  Average chip stack is about T5,500 or so I think, and I am approximately 300th at the time.

I was moved to this table about 30 minutes prior.  Villain has sat on a chip lead throughout and played fairly tight, had not played a lot of hands and not got into any big pots so far.   As you can see, blinds are 50/100, going up every 30 minutes, and fairly soon were going to 75/150.

I put him on a big pair or AK initially, and called intending to check/fold most or all flops that did not have an 8.  When the flop hit, I did consider 99, but figured that an overpair or AK/AQ of clubs were more likely.  I considered calling and moving in if there was no club on the turn, but figured that reraising on the flop might get him to lay down a flush draw or TJ or something similar (which I thought he was not likely to have in any event) and I was hoping it would get a call from an overpair.

Does anyone not go broke here?  Just wondering how others would play it.  Is this a hand I could/should have got away from?  I know set vs set is hard to get away from, but did I overplay it by reraising?

Good luck to all of you still in the WCOOP events!

  • If you don't get broke here you are seriously misplaying the hand. Terribly unlucky, almost every time I would expect to be shown an overpair and thank the guy for letting me see the flop cheaply.
  • Harrington's book says its best (paraphrased), "once a year or so, I have someone tell me, "i just knew he had a bigger set"..so i folded." Harrington says, "what an idiot"...

We all go broke with that hand.
