Professional Players

Just doing a quick poll. Who do you think is the most recognizable/marketable professional poker player today.

Comments

  • Phil Hellmuth. And whoever might be the 2nd most recognizable/marketable isn't even close.

It just goes to show you that in terms of mass marketing, hype and hysteria often win out over more important things such as, let's say, knowing how to behave in public at a higher level than an 8 year old.

    ScottyZ

P.S. I was speaking metaphorically here, and meant no offence towards 8 year olds by comparing them with Phil.
  • I think Doyle Brunson

My thinking stems from Roy Cooks pleas to have him take the raines on the new era of poker. Cooke "The only one who can pull it off is Doyle" (paraphrased)... but I tend to agree
  • Daniel Negreanu, though argueably. He's got it all, charisma, great skills, aggressive, accessible. It was wonderful having Hellmuth and him doing play-by-play at the WSOP Final Table 2005. Hellmuth would be my 2nd guy, what holds him back is though is that when he plays, he is a prick and he needs to get on a role again. Phil has a great knowledge of the game and players though.
  • Have they broadcast the final table yet? if so which station? thanks
  • Not yet, but there is live audio of the final table available at www.cardplayer.com. They talk a lot more about the poker world in general than the actual hands though but it's interesting enough to listen to while doing something else on the computer.

    Johnny Chan - Rounders...
  • Scotty Nyguen...just joking, I would have to say Negraneau for now
  • Gotta go with Doyle Brunson - everyone knows him and respects him
  • I'm going to have to Say Gus or the Unibomber....both get a lot of people talking about poker.

    Deuces never lose
  • I change my mind...the Unabomber is the most recognizable because he is my buddy and he let me have sex with his g/f....just kidding!

That's cool about the girl friend thing, too bad you were only kidding about being your buddy.......What about Gabe Kaplan or Richard Nixon?

I think I would have to go with Johnny Chan or Chris Moneymaker.
  • I'd have to say Helmuth and Negreanue....i spelled these wrong! anyhow, these guys are great players that know how to talk like a car salesman! but Gus Hansen is my all time favorite....I heard he's coming out with a book this christmas? true or false?

    :c: :d: :rage::s: :h:
  • for sure johnny chan the master - rounders.......... enough said
  • It has to be Gus Hansen.
  • Phil Ivey, ok maybe not, but I like him the most.

Helmuth is probably the most widely known, Doyle is the most respected.

A book?? What the fck would he write about?
It would be only 3 or 4 pages I would guess.
  • The big two are Chan and Doyle. Chan in Rounders made him pretty popular I guess, but Doyle is ALWAYS on TV. And who is that guy that does those Party Poker commercials? He is on twice an hour, everday on TBS.
  • You mean Mike Sexton?
  • The fat guy that claims to be, "just like you" and how without party poker he wouldn't be a pro.
  • have you been watching sexton play in the poker superstars 2... he's not bad.

Are you talking about PokerStars and Moneymaker/Raymer?
  • don't bash raymer... he's good... moneymaker on the other hind, jeesh.
