What are some of the best movie scenes?

For a recent film I would have to say that the best scene in the movie (not the series ... no thread jacking please) is when Darth Vadar took his first breath.

Lots of movement is happening. Limbs are being connected to Vadar, lots of sounds, machines, screams, etc. Vadar's headpiece is connected.

All sound has stopped, you could literally hear a pin drop in the theatre. The screen now shows a close up of Vadar's (masked) head and after a couple of seconds you hear Vadar taking his first breath.

That one scene just blew me away. I thought it was incredibly simple yet very powerful.

  • Theres two scenes have to mention. First is in Pulp Fiction with Samuel L. Jackson reciting that passage from he bible before he kills Brett. It just sounds so cool and he builds it up well. Number 2 is in Crimson Tide, which I think is an underrated movie, when Jackson and Hackman are standing nose to nose during the climax and yelling all these commands and arguments for what each wants to do about the nuke. Great intensity from both actors. Every time I watch it my skin tingles.
  • I'll throw out the classic torture scene from Resevoir Dogs, where Mr. Blonde (Masden) tortures the cop. No dialog, but I can still hear "Stuck in the Middle With You" playing in the background. Distrubing and gripping, and very memorable.
  • Théoden: "Èomer! Take your éored down the left flank!"
Théoden: "Gamling, follow the King's banner down the center!"
Théoden: "Grimbold, take your company right, after you pass the wall!"
Théoden: "Forth! And fear no darkness"
Théoden: "Arise! Arise, Riders of Théoden!"
Théoden: "Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered!"
Théoden: "A sword day...a red day...and the sun rises!"
Èowyn/Dernhelm: "What ever happens, stay with me. I'll look after you."
Théoden: "Ride now...Ride now...Ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending!"
    Théoden: "Death!"
    Rohirrim: "Death!"
    Théoden: "Death!"
    Rohirrim: "Death!"
    Théoden: "Death!!!"
    Èowyn and Merry: "Death!!!"
    Théoden: "Forth, Eorlingas!"

The theatre shook from the sound that ensued. Got chills from the horses trampling...

    Yes I'm a fantasy geek.

Ha youre right. I got my black actors confused.
  • Beanie's scene from Reservoir Dogs is a great one, as Samuel J in Pulp Fiction

I think for being a theatre, the ending of Seven starting from Kevin Spacey's monologue in the back of the cab to the end of the movie left people in the theatre noticeably disturbed. I just remember walking out with NO ONE in the theater saying a word.

Same went for the first 15 minutes of Saving Private Ryan, which, when things calmed down, you could hear several/many people sobbing in the crowd in the theatre.
  • So many to choose from.  I'll pick an all too recent scene when Hilary Swank was telling off Clint Eastwood by the speed bag.  It was sooooo(ted) quiet in the theatre during and after that scene.  I was thinking, this is the scene they will play when the Academy awards her Best Actress.  It turns out I was wrong, they played a different scene.  I just wish they'd stop making boxing movies now.

Yeah fun scene but I'm old enough that I saw the original Star Wars when it was released.  Shortly thereafter my cousin and I bought light sabers in Niagara Falls.  (I wish I had saved those!!)  When I saw the 'birth' scene of Vader after all that time I was to the point where I thought, "Finally!  I never have to watch Stars Wars ever again."  I was kind of hoping Lucas would make 3 more - isn't that what most people thought - but really, it's ok.
  • There are so many great scenes in great movies...I really like the following three....

    1) Deer Hunter...Russian roulette...that was pretty intense.
    2) True Romance...Christopher Walken & Dennis Hopper...the scene in Hoppers trailer just b4 he gets whacked...awesome.
    3) Goodfellas...The opening cords of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love"...The camera is on DeNiro's face and all he does is give a nod to Ray Liotta...his expression says it all..."We pulled it off...were fuckin' kings!" (Referring to the Lufthansa Robbery).

No, you were right the first time. Denzel isn't in Pulp Fiction
  • Sushi Bar Assistant: [Japanese] What'd ya want?
The Bride: [English] I beg your pardon?
    Hattori Hanzo: [English] Oh..."drink"
    [makes drinking motion with hand]
The Bride: [English] Oh, yes, a bottle of warm sake please.
Hattori Hanzo: [English] Warm sake? BERRY GOOOOOOOOOOOOD!

No, you were right the first time. Denzel isn't in Pulp Fiction

He's talking about Crimson Tide, which stars Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman.

Some of my favorite scenes include:

    Trainspotting
    - the part where he's at home trying to get over his heroin addiction and he envisions the baby crawling toward him.
    - the part where he loses his suppositories in the toilet and he dives into the toilet to retrieve them

    Planes, Trains, & Automobiles
    - the part where John Candy is driving at night and Steve Martin wakes up and notices that they are driving on the wrong side of the highway.
    - the part where Steve Martin wakes up and asks John Candy where he has his hand.
  • The shower scene in Schindler's List. That was so freakin' scary. I remember the sense of relief I felt when water poured into the shower, not gas.

Although it's tough to tell what a character may or may not be thinking, I'd have to disagree with you on this one.  I think that, as 'Sunshine' starts playing and the camera slowly zooms into DeNiro's face, he is thinking that he is going to have to kill just about everybody who helped him with the robbery.  That way, he doesn't have to worry about people running to the cops, and he doesn't have to split the take so many ways.

Have a look at the scene again, and the scenes surrounding it, and I think you might agree.

    Great scene, though.
  • I with Aces on the GoodFellas scene. It is about killing everyone. It was that night that Moe was busting his balls about his cut.
  • perhaps you are right on the goodfellas scenre...I'll have to rent it again...it's been awhile.

I just remembered my favorite scene from NL Vacation. The camera shows the kids sleeping in the backseat...then shows Beverley D'angelo sleeping in shotgun...and finally to Chevy Chase who is asleep at the wheel...fffing hilarious!

Uncle Buck...John Candy's scene with the principal and his fixation with the mole on her face. Too funny!
  • Here you go:
Buck Russell: I don't think I want to know a six-year-old who isn't a dreamer, or a sillyheart. And I sure don't want to know one who takes their student career seriously. I don't have a college degree. I don't even have a job. But I know a good kid when I see one. Because they're ALL good kids, until dried-out, brain-dead skags like you drag them down and convince them they're no good. You so much as scowl at my niece, or any other kid in this school, and I hear about it, and I'm coming looking for you! Take this quarter, go downtown, and have a rat gnaw that thing
[Anita's mole] off your face! Good day to you, madam.

    Very funny.

  • more Buck Russell...I'm Buck Melanoma. Moley Russell's wart. Not her wart. I'm her growth, her pimple. They sometimes call me Melanoma head.
  • This is on another thread somewhere, but it's so funny, I'll post it again!

Maisy's Teacher: Does anybody have a special story to tell the class about something that happened this week?
    [Maisy raises her hand]
    Maisy's Teacher: Maisy?
Maisy Russell: My Uncle was micro waving our socks and the dog threw up on the couch for an hour.
    Maisy's Teacher: Honest?
    Maisy Russell: Mm-Hmm.
Maisy's Teacher: Why was your Uncle micro waving your socks?
Maisy Russell: He can't get the goddamn washing machine to work.
    Maisy's Teacher: BLASPHEIMER!

How they got away with a 6 year old girl saying "goddamn" I'll never know, but she delivered the line perfectly!!
