Poker League
I have been asked to start a poker league and I was wondering if anyone has been part of one that they thought was a good format. Ideally I would like it to run in 8 week segments with week eight being the grand final. I am thinking I want there to be a point system invovled so people can join whenever. any ideas would be appreicated.

A guy on this forum runs a top-notch poker league, but I am withholding his name because of all the Narc bastards out there. He hosts a game every 2nd Monday night, and tracks all the results on an excel spreadsheet (from the chump to the champ), for a total of 26 games before the year-end championship.
Pretty much the same group comes out each week, but the ways things are, not everyone can make every game. I think he draws from a pool of about 25 guys, and usually there are between 10 and 14 guys for each game. The buy-in is always $50, with $50 re-buys up to 1.5 hours, and a $25 add-on. Usually top 3 pay.
There is a money list (like the PGA tour), and whoever has the most coin at the end of the year is the league champion. Also, each bi-monthly winner earns his place in the tournament of champions, which is only for people who win at least 1 event. He skims $50 off every prize pool each game, that goes towards the buy-in for the tournament of champions at the end of the year. There is also a year-end championship game for everyone to enter, regardless if you've won an event or not, but you must have attended at least 5 games to qualify. A portion of the skimmed pots goes to this prize pool, as well as the tournament of champions prize pool.
It's a really nice system, even the winner has to bring the beer to the next game, and the 2nd place finisher brings the snacks. Failure to do so is enforced by ridiculous amounts of taunting and a possible black-ball for future games.
It's an excellent system and proves for some really great poker every 2 weeks. Playing against the same guys in a league really is a great way to improve your game, and find out where your holes are. I'd highly recommend it, if you can get your boys to commit and not bitch-out all the time. Of course, it will only work if everyone is equally into it, and if you have a good dedicated League director to run it, and host it. And if he has his little 1 year old daughter running around and distracting him, then all the better, because he just might muck the nut flush after hitting on the river.
(*) Note: Points are calculated using the following formula:
points = sqr(weight) * (10 * sqr(# of players) / sqr(rank) - 9)
Where weight = (buy-in amount) / 10
This is a similar one:
New Point System:
Points = 10 * [sqrt(n)/sqrt(k)] * [1+log(10+0.25)]
Where:
sqrt= Square Root
n is the number of entrants
k is the place of finish (k=1 for the first-place finisher, and so on)
10 = Multiplier
I'm not worried. I don't take a rake plus, I pay protection if you know what I mean..
Yeah, I finally got to see this happen......... Up close.
Pm me with your email and I will send you the spreadsheet and details..
Sounds like a great idea. What city would this run? Would the same person host every week?
