  • I really like Philly's chances, as well as the Alberta teams. Toronto is now almost max capped, so this is pretty much their team for the start of the season. As much as I'm a Leafs fan, it would surprise me if Toronto is able to be top 5 in the conference this season. I'm hoping they will get 6th or 7th, and drawing Ottawa (I'm pretty sure they'll win division, with Boston second place and Montreal just behind Toronto) again for the playoffs.

For Sens fans, I'm not those typical Leafs fan who just bash Sens because they lost to us everytime in the playoffs. The Sens have a good team this year, and if Hasek can stay healthy, the Sens can possibly make a good run. I just like the new idea of building up rivaries (as if there isn't enough between the Ontario teams already), as well as the funny bets politicians make during the playoff times.
  • Now this I like. A Leafs fan with a realistic outlook on the coming season. 99.9% of TML fans I know are ALWAYS saying "We're winning the cup this year, for sure!". And they never do. Don't get me, I wish them well, but open your eyes!!

Personally, I'm cheering for the Flames, but I won't mind seeing Pittsburgh getting into the playoffs, either. (I was always a SuperMario fan)

    Time will tell, I guess.

Lots of potential for the Penguinos this year! C'mon Mario...one last run for old times sake!

(or at least sneak into the playoffs and make some waves)
  • As in every other year, Philly has a great team but no goalie, so I don't think they have much of a shot.  Personally, I think Ottawa has the best chance (do I have to return my Leaf fan club membership now?).  However, not being a basher, but Ottawa has very little chance of getting by the Leafs.  They just have their number, and I don't think this year's any different (although I don't think the Leaf's will advance far either :( ).  So now that I've eliminated Ottawa/Toronto/Philly, I'm left with only one possibility - a Calgary/T.B. rematch for the cup (although Vancouver is pretty close).  I wouldn't "pick" those 2, but after evaluating the various scenarios, it seems the most likely.  Not a bad choice though, since that was a killer series the first time.

I'm really looking forward to the Leafs/Penguins game - Team Canada (Lemieux/Crosby) vs. Canada's Team (the Blue/White)
  • Leafs odds apparantly went to 12-1 with the signing of Eric Lindros.

I love 3 of the signings TML have done recently, they managed to sign 3 home grown boys who grew up watching and loving the Leafs.

Eric Lindros- Born and raised in T.O., has been dying to play for the Blue and White for the last 5-6 years. I think he is a great addition, PHSH*. (Provided He Stays Healthy)

Jason Allison- A North York boy who also grew up loving the Leafs.

Jeff O'Neill- Born and raised in King City, has also expressed a desire to play for the Leafs for many years now.

The Leafs now have a core group of rugged local boys who realize the pride and the history behind wearing the Blue and White. This is exactly what the Leafs have needed for many many years now. I don't think too many "soft" players will be taking too many nights off now that these 3 have been added to the team.
  • I must agree, the Leafs definitely made better use of $4.5 million adding those 3 guys then they would've if they resigned Niewy and Roberts. I know there has been many criticisms of JFJ's decision in signing three players who have had injuries that affected their play, but this is a high reward scenerio. Even if just 2 of the 3 players play the way they are capable of playing, Leafs are got alot more offence in this "new ice age" where they're pushing for offensive production. I know some people still would've preferred getting a Forsberg, or a Niedermeyer, or even a Kariya, but another big hit to the cap is not what the Leafs need. We got 3 players who each have a potential to produce what 1 of those players can bring offensively (not exactly, I mean who is as good as Neidermeyer or Forsberg at what they do, but this point of view is strictly from a cost point of view) Granted the Leafs are probably not any closer to being a Stanley Cup contender as they were at the beginning of the lockout, but at least the Leafs have gotten younger, and with contracts expiring next season, JFJ gave himself more room to move around to continue to upgrade his team. I look forward to this season as I have the last several, now the Leafs probably will not make the finals, but it will be a fun ride watching hockey again.

As far as the Team Canada vs. Canada's Team, that will probably be the hottest tickets in town, even before the Sens or the Habs.

I just want to throw this out at non-Leafs fans here. I'm sure you all remember during Calgary's run for the playoffs, some Torontonians (including myself), jumped on the band wagon, and soon Calgary became Canada's team in the finals. I'm just curious how many of you will do the same say Toronto were making a run, would Montreal fans cheer for the blue and white, or would Leafs fan cheer on the Sens in their run, or would Calgary fans cheer on the Oilers? This probably won't reflect what hardcore fans would say, but just wondering what would the people of this forum do.
Personally, I am a hardcore Leafs fan, but I won't go as far as saying I hate the Sens or any team for that matter. I'm also a fan of the game, so the next best thing to Toronto winning, is of course to see the mug come north of the border. Some would consider me a traitor, but I will have no problem giving my suppor to any Canadians teams in the finals (given they are not playing the Leafs of course)

I could see myself cheering for any of the Western teams (Calgary is actually my second-favorite team anyway) and even for Ottawa, since I don't see that as a "real" rivalry (yet), just media-hype in my opinion. However, I could never cheer for Montreal, ever - that would simply be heresy!
  • I'm a Stars fan first ... then a Leafs fan.

    ... so ya ...

  • I'm a huge leafs fan and they have a lot of depth down the middle. However they have no scoring whatsoever on the wings beyond O'Neill & Tucker. Sportsnet reported today that they are thinking of signing Steve Thomas. That is ridiculous. What is the point of that? I wish that this Nolan thing would get cleared up asap. If his salary doesn't count towards the cap the Leafs should go after Anson Carter, Teemu Selanne or Stumpel. If Nolan's salary does go against the cap I think that they will be on the bubble as far as making the playoffs.
Philly and Ottawa will be the teams to beat in the East. Philly will probably have the best GAA no matter who they place between the pipes. They will probably avg on giving up only 18-23 shots against per game. I think that Ottawa will open up their play alot more now that they have a new coach. Hossa, Havlat, Alfie and Spezza will all have big years. I am predicting that they will beat Vancouver in this years Stanley Cup final.
  • The "new" NHL is going to be alot better to watch then the old. With most teams being in the same category of talent and with the new rule changes its going to be great to watch hockey again. Those 2-1 games were starting to get to me, now the 6-4 games will plentiful. The no red line rule is going to open up the game and some of these smaller quicker guys are going to be able to make some more teams. It won't be as much the big, tough players like it has been the last 10 years.

Also wasn't that run by the Flames the most exciting thing for canadian hockey fans in awhile. It was great to watch them run over teams like the Redwings, the Canucks(after the bertuzzi incident i didn't want them to go anywhere, and still don't), and the Sharks. Then to have two chances at winning the cup. It was just great.
