What $$$ would make you go pro

Would you go pro if there was a way you could earn your current salary playing poker 40h/wk, or would you have to know that you were making more than that.

Do you think that you would enjoy playing that often on a consistant basis, or that poker would end up being more tedious than your current profession.

  • Hmm, good question. I have a feeling I would tire of the grind. I play now about 20 - 30 hours a month, and I would say that there are plenty of times I could play (read...the wife went to bed or isn't home and I am nag free) but don't because I just don't feel like it. I have only rarely ever played 6 hours or more at a time on-line, and usually am ready to quit by then. I think it would be a short time before I got sick of it.

Live poker may be a bit better but I expect the answer is the same for different reasons. I've never played in a casino yet, but I expect the "stereotypical" poker personality would piss me off too much for me to want to keep going. (berating players and dealers, no-it alls). Bottom line, I'm a little to competitive and having a losing session against a table of Yacks would eat me up to much to do it for a living.

I really enjoy it a s a hobby I enjoy but don't need, and am making a little spending money as a bonus.

I think that the above is the hard part. I :h: the game of poker. I enjoy playing it, studying it, thinking about past hands, etc. And it would only take a single BIG tournament win to get past my salary in a year. If I could use poker to make money and still have time to invest in other things I enjoy doing, then I think I could do it.

The other part would be the lifestyle. I have done consulting work and after a year was tired of living out of hotel rooms. With the internet, you could probably pull this off from home, but to be a real pro you would have to hit the road. Maybe if I had high-roller suites and flying first class it would be different, but the grind of being a pro is not too appealing at this point in my life.

It would be a great retirement type job ... there are a lot of "old pros" out there. Hope to be one of them someday.

God, this is me to a 'T'...could I do it for a living, yeah if I made $20/hr playing or more.....but do I ever foresee that....not unless I was always playing against myself?

I'm nowhere close to the skill required, but assuming I were, I still wouldn't do it. Having read comments from other pro's, I personally wouldn't enjoy the whole "lifestyle". My current job allows me to spend a lot of time with my family. If I'm working overtime, I still quit at 5:30 and just start back up after 8:30 when the kids are in bed. Being away from the family evenings and weekends would be the killer for me. Now, if the hours are "regular" (day-time), it would start to become tempting, but my job is still my primary passion (I'm blessed that I love what I do).
  • 30$/hr
plus whatever tourney fee's I would be playing in over the course of a year (WSOP/WTP/etc)

So maybe 40+$/hr to feel 'safe'
  • US$400/day. What's that - three 10-player $200 SNG per day/5 days per week? 2 wins, 2 2nds, 4 3rds. Or so.

    Tax free. F___ the gov't.

4 hours per day. No commuting. Sweet.
  • I personally wouldnt want to turn pro if it meant being paid less or the same amount because of a lack of benefits, vacation pay, retirement plans and job security.

You really need the right mentality to play poker for a living. After going through your first 300+ BB downswing, it can be a very demoralizing to the point where the last thing in the world you want to do is play poker.

It can become a grind very quickly.

Please do not fill the Party $200 SNG's with players who have a clue.

    Thank you.
  • MINIMUM $100,000/year. And that's minimum. I make a very decent wage right now, and once you add on benefits, allowances, and bonuses, nothing less than that would do it for me. Will it ever happen? Not in MY lifetime!!!

Lets see...that's just shy of $2000/week. How many SNG's at $20buyins would that mean? How many hours? The way I play, it could mean I would need approximately 36hours per day...not including sleep, food, and other activities.

Nope, I'll take my day job...don't have to work so hard. :D

I'm eating up the 10/20$ Party SnG's currently.
    I think I've played around 12-14 this week. 4 1sts, 2 2nds, 2 3rds, rest 9th/10th (suck outs vs AA and KK :'( )
Do you really think they're that easy ?
If only I had the bankroll

Looks like you are placing in the money in about half your SNGs. That's my target as well. I would expect the $200 to be a bit more difficult but if I can learn to *represent* an ace, I should do ok... :D

Sorry, Devin. Someone has to keep you honest.

An ITM ("in the money") rate of 50% is probably the pinnacle of a SNG players career and very likely unattainable. 40% is probably on the high end of the bell curve...even for the best of SnG players.

In my experience (and database) as you move up the SnG limits, its not your ITM that falls, its your ROI. It seems getting ITM is just as easy at the high levels, but the shorthanded ability of the players the you are continually meeting in the top spots is much better.
  • simple answer, anything that is more than I would make working a job I like less than playing poker. or even maybe 2/3 of what I would be making as the life is so much better. I currently make about 50K us a year without putting in a lot of hours as I am kind of lazy and like to enjoy life. For most players with a good job, I think it would take one huge tourney win to make the switch but eveyones situation is different
  • I think the grind would get to me. My current job is poker, I do not have a summer job and I rely fully on poker. This summer has been very profitable for me, but there are days when poker feels like job and I don't even want to see another hand. Granted this is 3 table grinding 1/2 and 2/4 online, Im sure higher stake tournaments and ring games would keep the adrenaline going a little more.
