Interesting Situation in $1/$2 NL at Casino Niagara
I played the 1/2 NL game on Friday from about 1:30pm to 7:30pm or so, in case any of you were there. The following situation came up:
- After some preflop raising, it was down to three players before the flop (EP, MP, and LP...LP was the PF raiser, bumping it to $10)
- Before the flop, EP player said "I check in the dark"
- MP player didn't say anything
- LP player said "okay, I'm gonna raise $15 in the dark"
- Flop was AQT rainbow
- EP (obviously) checked
- The dealer started explaining that depending on how much (if anything) the MP player bets, the LP player's blind raise may or may not count (i.e. if MP bets less than $15, the blind raise stands, and LP must call the MP bet and raise by $15. But if MP bets more than $15, then LP's raise doesn't count because the raise has to be at least as large as the bet)
- As the dealer was explaining this, MP said "well then I check" and knocked the table
- But the dealer was still talking, and I don't think MP originally understood what the dealer said because he then wanted to bet $30 to force LP to take back his raise
- LP argued that MP checked
- MP and the dealer said that the check didn't count because the dealer was in the process of informing MP of his options and that MP is entitled to know all of his options before acting
- Aside from MP and the dealer, everyone at the table agreed that MP clearly checked, aside from the EP player, who wanted the bet by MP to stand
- The three players and the dealer argued about this for several minutes before two floor managers came over, who then participated in the debate for another several minutes

I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR THIS !!!!!
LP has 10s
not sure about MP, but maybe AK
2) the ruling should be that he checked
3) the ruling was probably that he got to bet (the supervisor backing up the dealer)
MP wants the bet in so LP cannot raise?!? If he has something, why not LP put the blind bet back in and come back over the top. No I dea what he has, maybe a weak Ace rag.
EP, well he wants the bet in so I am guessing he picked up a big hand. Since he didn't raise pf, AA QQ AK are ruled out. maybe AQ or TT, but he probably KJ.
LP doesn't want the MP bet in for some reason (no idea why). If he has a hand, he would want the $30 in there (so he can raise), if he doesn't have a hand he wouldn't want the $30 in there (so his blind raise wouldn't count). I am totally lost on LP moves but with the raise, I guess he has a premium. AK AQ AA QQ?
Ruling, should stand that MP checked. Its up to the player to know what his options are, the dealer is just there to help. NIAGARA RULING, MP bet turns from $30 into $100 because the pit poss didn't understand what was going on and though s/he heard an all in.
LOL, I agree.
The ruling was that MP had to honour his check. The one boss sided with the dealer, but the more senior of the two said that if there was a distinctive check, regardless of the context, then the check stands. Here is how the hand played out:
- MP forced to check
- LP's blind raise is now a $15 bet
- EP Re-raises to $45 or so
- MP folds like origami
- LP goes into the tank for about three minutes, and eventually mucks it
Congrats to Tilter for guessing that EP had AQo for top two pair (I, too, assumed he had KJ). MP didn't show, although I'm guessing he definitely had an ace. It turns out that LP had KK. The whole thing took about 10 minutes and was pretty interesting...until the dealer change five minutes later when we had to post our session fees for what seemed like two or three hands. Overall, I had a great time. It was my first time to CN, and I'll definitely be back for some SSNL.
May the flop be with you.
thanks for the story!
