Introduction - Need Recommendations

Just wanted to introduce myself. I've been playing for a few years, I think I started back in 02. But back then was just chips and play money, didn't get into real money until recently when I turned 18. Found this forum a couple of days ago and mainly just read some of the stuff, must say this is a great place, especially looking for local games and just tips and discussions. Played alot of NL Hold'em with play money, but right now just trying to build a bankroll on the $1/$2 limit hold'em games, and occasionally play some omah and studs, but still learning the in and outs so mainly play play money. I'm usually on stars, and occasionally on party. Looking forward to possibly play in a couple of local games in August, and maybe even at Bristol in the winter when I go up to Waterloo.

  • Welcome to the forum. This is a great place to be if you are a poker player. If your looking for a game this weekend, check out the Bolton Poker thread about our tourney, under home games "ladies and gentlemen, bolton poker has officially reopened thier doors".

Welcome to the forum. You mention Waterloo in the winter, so I'm assuming you're heading to one of the Universities. Where are you from (and looking for games)? I'm in KW, but I'm sure someone on the board has summer action close to you (once they know where).
  • I'm be at Waterloo starting September. I don't mind travelling a bit if its close to campus. But I'm open to carpooling if someone can pick me up =D
  • wat school u go to i will be there too i am thinking of setting up somethin or just finding games, in n around waterloo n maybe brantford, lemme know if anyone hears or needs anything, thanks

LOL, sure sounds like Cole doesn't it? Maybe his twin brother..... :):)
  • Figure I would post in my original intro thread rather than starting a new one. I'm looking to pick up a few copies of poker books which I can read while I take the next month or so off from online ring games so I can study my game and hopefully bring it to the next level. I have read several books in the past (Super System 1 and 2, Playing Poker like the Pros and a couple others) and I'm hoping to pick up Lee Jones book as well as Scharf's book in the near future. I'm wondering if there is a "standard" library list that anyone can provide that is like a "must have" for poker players. I don't want to spend too much money at this point, but I am planning to purchase a few so I may improve my game. I'm not looking into the deep books at this point, but would like to at least read a few of the text.

And if anyone has any for sale, all the better.
  • Small Stakes Hold'em (Ed Miller) - Probably the best book ive read for the limits youll be playing
Holdem for Advanced Players (Sklansky) - A must for any player aspiring to playing in higher limit games or tougher games
Theory of Poker (Sklansky) - A book that you will reread over and over and over through the course of your poker journeys. This book is like Shakespeare, you learn a little something new everytime you read it or notice something that you totally missed the first time.
  • Since you're mostly playing $1-$2 limit poker, I'd suggest reading the books below, in the order listed.

Books like SS1, SS2, HPFAP, Middle Limit Poker, etc don't contain much material that will help you at low-stakes limit poker. Worse yet, most of the strategies presented in these books represent good advice for middle and high stakes poker players, and as a result they will often be the exact opposite of correct low-limit strategies.

Play Poker Like the Pros is probably best unlearned.

    Essential, read first

    Dave Scharf, Winning at Poker
Lee Jones, Winning Low-Limit Holdem (3rd Ed)

    Essential, read next

    Theory of Poker, David Sklansky
Small Stakes Hold'em, Miller, Sklansky & Malmuth

    Optional

    Zen of Poker, Larry Phillips
Hold'em Poker For Advanced Players, David Sklansky (Again, not too much directly applicable to low-limit hold'em, but this may complement SSHE and TOP well, since a lot of common language and general ideas are shared among these three books.)

  • What Scotty said. And particularly read WLLHE by Jones before reading SSHE by Miller, Sklansky and Malmuth. Without a solid base I think the 2nd book's unbridled (selective) aggression could be easily used in the wrong situations.
