Other games?
OK, the preamble:
I find myself in a mini-rut. Can't make the money in a SNG for my life, recently have had some tough sessions moving from 1-2 to 2-4 limit. Not bankroll threatening but frustrating nonetheless. In short, July should be my first -ve month in some time. When I get in these ruts, I find Hold'em is a game I start to detest sometimes. I play poker for fun, as a hobby, the $ benefits are just bonus (and a nice ego boost) After a bad session or tough SNG I tend to play some lower limit other games (Stud, Omaha H/L, etc.) Keep in mind I don't really consider myself very good at these games, but I find them interesting nonetheless, and I think if you have a solid tight poker game, you tend to not end up chasing those long odds like the other players at the table.
In short, I'm a little shocked at how utterly weak the play seems to be in these games. I don't have much experience, but when I see idiots playing trip hole cards in Omaha in a raised pot, or some guy in Stud chasing his 2 small pair to fill up when the other guy is showing 3 of a kind, well even I know that's probably not the best play. Even the average (or bad) hold'em player quickly realizes that playing 8-3o in EP might not be a +EV move. I'd guess that at similar limits there are much more mistakes being made in the other games than in Holdem (at least online).
So, the question then: Do most people here consider themselves "poker" players, or "holdem" players? And for the people that do play other games, would you think there is greater opportunities in these games given the number of mistakes made by weak players? Or maybe the weaker play simply extends from the lower limits I inevitably play since:
a) I'm usually playing for "a holdem break" (ie. fun)
b) I don't want to be jeopardizing significant chunks of my BR on a game I'm still learning.
Thoughts?
