Did anyone play in the Rama tourny July 25?

I finally made my way up to Rama for the first time in years yesterday. I can't believe all the changes they have made, very impressive facility now.

I got there just as a $300 NL tourny was being seated and was wondering if any forum members had entered. There were 77 players, I missed it by 10 minutes according to the Soup, they had 25 open spots at 10am still but it filled up after that.

I ended up playing on the 5/10 table. For most of the day I was doing all right, until I got AA, KK and JJ almost consecutively. My AA got cracked by a guy chasing runner runner straight on the river, my KK was in the BB and I was raising throughout, only 1 caller, an extremely loose 82 year old who played anything and everything, board flopped a Q and a flush draw so I was hoping he had a Q or was chasing. Turns out he had AA and didn't raise me because he thought I might have had QQ for the set. My JJ flopped a set but was cracked by a flush chaser...

Oh well, that's poker.

  • How do you find the 5-10 there? I only played 5-10 @ port perry and 2-5 there (I figure the 5-10 @ Port Perry would be softer since its their lowest limits).
I was planning to playt he July 25th Tourney since no major land based tourneys for me to attend in Ontario area (no Sats to Regina :( ) and couldn't make it out for Brantford. I guess I may have to play mid August or Late Augst as a back to school special for me.
  • It is pretty much the same as The Port, hard to push people off before the river if they are chasing anything, not too much raising going on and even less reraising. My table was fun for the most part. We had a little excitement between an Asian woman in her 30's and an older Asian man probably in his 70's. The woman hit her small pair on the river (5's) and the man just started freaking out, calling her to fight and even raising his fist at her. The soup was behind him when he did this and had to grab his arm or he would have thrown a punch at her. :D

Another man (82 years old as he told everyone at the table at least 82 times) played 95% of his hands and chased everything all the way to the river. Quite a few times he would ask me "Is that a Q?" "Is that a 6?" etc. He was also the one who crushed my pocket K's with his pocket A's, not once throwing out a bet or a raise. I had him on AQ all the way until he flipped his cards. Terrible read on my part, but everyone at the table was as shocked as I was.

The Poker room was much nicer than The Port. Very nicely run, very classy looking. I was very impressed with that part of it.

When I got there and saw that the tournament was taking up 7 of the 11 tables I figured I was in for a long long wait. Au Contraire! I was second on the list so I wandered around the Casino for about 10 minutes before they called me. You can't get on a table at The Port in 10 minutes even if there is no list. The average waiting time at The Port is probably 2 hours, anything less is a miracle.
  • I beg to differ... I work at the GBH and spend most of the time in the Poker Pit... Yes.. we are VERY BUSY.. we boast some of the best fields in Ontario.. You do not wait 2hrs for a table there all the time... That would all depend on what time you get there.. If you come in there around 12noon when we are opening up the tables after the day shift dealers get there... you will find that your average wait time if there is a BIG list is at the most 1hr and as little as 10mins... If there is anything that we can do to keep you happy.. Shoot away :D We are there to please you (the customer).

BTW I was at Rama on Tuesday night playing 5/10 (It should be criminal to allow us to take the fishies money that easily.. Flopping nuts and betting all the way and getting paid off by morons with 2nd pair no kicker) gotta love it... A few things that really i mean REALLY bothered me about Rama's room is.. (do not get me wrong I have played there since they opened) 1) One of our lady dealers had NO PERSONALITY AT ALL
    2) One of our other dealers spent more time watching TV that dealing the game.. There were raises and the dealer was not even aware.. as he was too busy watching the sports updates on the 27" TV above him..
    3) I think the room is ran poorly at best. (no comparison to GBH)

These are my opinions anyhow.. I am sure we are in for a real treat at the Ex with some of the brand new dealers ugh

    Anyhow, GL to all

  • Just so I finally reply to an OP, no.  I will now change my title to 'King of the non sequitur'

Hi Pokerkid, Lee has replied on my request before but since you asked, my recollection is the poker area is dingy.  That's not the part I asked Lee about.  It was, will there be a true poker room at GBH?  There might be in a year and a half but I won't return until then.  I can go to Rama and mostly Fallsview to get some fresh air.  It's a nice change of scenery up there, I'm looking forward to returning one day.  Late night food was affordable.

Again, I know - or at least still think - I'm in the minority on this one, a non smoking poker player.  Word.
  • PokerKid, I am not knocking The Port as far as the dealers and how it is run, but the wait list IS at least 2 hours everytime I go. I have gone at noon, 2pm, 6pm, 9pm, 11pm, 3am, 5am etc.... 2 hours minimum MOST of the time. I think I fluked out once where my wait was only 20 minutes or so. And one particular dealer is such a beeeatch, she is grumpy and confrontational almost everytime I have had the "pleasure" of being at her table.

The Port is where I have played 90% of the time, I have only ventured out to Rama and Brantford once each. The Port is only 45 minutes from me. For the record, my wait at Brantford was over 4.5 hours, something about a holiday weekend.

Next time I go up to The Port, I will wear my MDS hat and you can introduce yourself and say hi. :D
  • My name is Terry and I supervise on day shift there.... I hope to see you guys there :) I agree it is damn smoky there :( I hope that all changes soon with the future plans that management ONLY know about. As far as us, we do not know what is happening there for future plans.. Heard rumours such as we are approved for commercial license and new location.. We can only pray that we one day get a nice poker room with tvs and SMOKEFREE :)

BTW Lee I have not seen ya lately. If I am stepping outta line at anytime, be sure to shut me up before I say something I should not say :D

  • Hey Terry,
do you have blond hair? Can't remember who you are. If I see you and say I'm from PF.CA, can I get a free meal comp :D

As for no personality dealers, you find them alot. Also some inexperienced ones since they don't play poker themselves. Always messing up the slit pots.
  • I do not have blond hair.. and we do not give comps out as a rule of thumb.. I have brown hair

  • rama's next tourney is Aug. 15 at noon. I am considering playing in it. I checked out the blind schedule and while it starts of ok it's really crazy later on. Also I've noticed that the dealers really seem to have trouble dealing. They are belaming it on the new cards they have but I've never seen so much mishandling of the cards in all my life.

The other thing they have to do is clean up their waiting list and stuff. We litterally had 3 vacant seats for 20 minutes while there was almost 75 people on the waiting list. Also I think they need to be a little better at where they put people. Last night there were 3 friends with fairly large stacks sitting beside each other at the table. I find it interesting that it was usually bet / raise / re raise between them making it very expensive to see some flops only to have one or two fold quickly after the flop.

If anyones interested I can post the blind schedule, they are 25 minutes long.
