Are home games legal in Toronto?

Is it legal to run a cash game from my home and take a rake? It seems like everyone is doing it. Are the cops going to bust down my door? If anyone is knowledgeable on the legal issues involved (penalties etc.) please enlighten me.

  • Take a rake? Yes, it is illegal. Will they bust down your door? Perhaps, but I don't know who the police target.

Advertising that you are taking a rake on a public forum is the first step in getting busted.

As for the entire legal stipulations, ScottyZ knows a lot but he is not a lawyer and will be the first to tell you that.
  • Ok, thanks. Anyone hear of any horror stories related to this site? I'm new to this forum and don't know the ins and outs of organizing my game in the best way. I appreciate any feedback I can get on the topic.
  • Check out the KWSOP in the Special Events Forum.

  • Thanks FlintBones. Consider me enlightened.
  • I have a question then. If a bar charges say a $10 admission to play in a fun poker tournament where the winner is suposed to get a chance to play in another tournament where they could win a trip, is that legal?

Dealers are paid. For the $10 entry nobody will see any cash even at the end of the final tournament.

I'd lean towards yes, but if you were considering playing in it I wouldnt worry, its the bar that would get in trouble.

LOL, don't suppose this has to do with a Saturday night tournament in Aurora does it?
  • I lean towards "no" but it's close and enforcement is currenlty OVERWHELMED with this sort of thing.
