Retro Report: Bristol Street Classic III

Up until now, I had used those cheap plastic chips that cost $2.50 for a sleeve of 100 and come in the exciting colours of red, white and blue. By the time Bristol Street Classic II rolled through, I was (as I'm sure many of us can relate to) hopelessly addicted to poker.

So, I really, really wanted some authentic chips and finally decided to break-down and buy some nice 11.5 g chips. I researched and researched, checking out various styles and online merchants. I checked out e-bay and finally not only decided on the style I wanted (Dice), but also the chip colour denomination. When I recieved the chips not only did I make a mistake in the deign - I accidentally ordered "D"iamond instead of "D"ice, but I had also forgotten to specify the chip distribution that I wanted. I'm brilliant.

In addition, this was a number of months before chips flooded the market, so the total price I paid after shipping, duty and exchange was a whopping $230. Ouch. (Although, I do maintain the chips I got before the chip glut, are of a much higher quality than what's coming out now.) So, if you happen to be playing at my place and notice some chips in your stack that have a diamond design... those are them.

For Bristol Street III, I upped the starting chip count from 100 to 250, but the most important change was that Bristol Street III was my first multi-table turnament. For some reason, I was convinced that I could only fit 7 people around a table, so the turnout ended up being capped at a monstrous 14 players!

The Class of BSC III (ie. people for whom BSC III was their first BSC tournament) included future two-time champion, "Slippery" Pete A. and our good friend "Easy".

BSC III also introducted the catch phrase.. "a prize package worth tens of dollars." Which would stick around for a number of tournaments. The BSC III report was also special for another reason in that I included reports I had gotten from other people and mixed them in with the action, which made for a MUCH more interesting report.

Brisol Street Classic III - RESULTS!!!

Bristol Street Class III brought out a record 14 players to the tables to compete in No Limit Texas Hold'em and a share in a prize purse of $200. Fourteen sharks came to the table including; "The Knave of Hearts" Rob LeGood, Anthony "Quickfingers" Runstedler, Dave "Brava" Selberg, Adam "Dumb L(f)uck" Stanely, Anthony "Nukular Fishin" Dharmasurya, James "Giggles" Harynuk, "Easy" Amanda C., Dustin "Dead Money" Windibank, "Slippery Pete" Aultman, "Bow" Tye Zinger, Chris "The Corpse" Klein, Erin "Trinity/The River" Moffat, "Handsome" Rob Card and "Devil" Dave Steel.

Each player paid $10, recieved 250 and the seats were assigned, broken into two tables. At table one; "Slippery Pete", "Easy", "Bow"Tye, "The River", Dead Money", "Handsome" Rob Card, and "Nukular Fishin". At table two; "Devil" Dave, "Dumb L(f)uck", "Giggles", "Brava", "The Knave", "Quickfingers", and the defending Bristol St. Casino champion, "The Corpse".

The timer was set and the tournament began, with the first hand of table two going to the powerful "Pair of Twos"! By the second or third hand, "The Knave" found himself in trouble. After begin dealt Poket Rockets (two Ace's) "The Knave" bet aggressively sending everyone out of the pot except for the "The Devil". After the flop turn and river, the board showed little to be worried about (especially the 4 that came up on the River), but the Devil kept in, revealing his pair of 4's in an extremely bad beat for "The Knave", finding himself losing almost 2/3rds of his initial chip stack on that hand.

An early hand on Table 1 saw "Easy" take a huge chip lead to begin the tournament, and kept that lead going into the second hour. The rest of the betting was aggressive and loose (due to the rebuys allowed in the first hour) and six people busted out in the first hour and rebought into the tournament; "Bow"Tye, "The Knave", "Brava", "Quickfingers", "Handsome" Rob, and "Slippery Pete". This put the prize pool at $200 meaning first place would take home $100.

We turn to "Dumb L(f)uck" Adam Stanley for an account of the last hand of the first hour on table two

I was dealt A2h and the flop came up 2 hearts and a King. I had a good feeling about it, so I stayed in. Anthony and Dave were on the verge of busting out, and I figured that I could clean up with a win because they were looking to dump their chips so they could re-buy before the hour was up. Anthony raised 50, and everyone called. The turn came up crap, and Anthony raised 150 and everyone called. Big pot for a small game. The river came, and it was a 5 of hearts - I forced myself not to smile. Anthony called All-In and everyone matched him. Between him and Dave, the best they had was two-pair, and my flush won the hand. It was time to count the chips and "Easy" at the other table announced that she had 1030. I chuckled as I realized that I had won 1050 in that hand alone :)

The "1" chips were replaced, the blinds went up to 5-10 and the chips were counted. Our leaderboard looked like this...

"Dumb L(f)uck" : 1190
"Easy" : 1030
"Giggles" : 560
"Trinity/The River" : 425
"The Corpse" : 280
"Quickfingers" : 250
"Brava" : 250
"The Knave" : 240
"Slippery Pete" : 240
"Handsome" Rob : 240
"Bow"Tye : 205
"Nukular Fishin": 190
"Devil" Dave : 75

The elimination portion of the night began! The first to exit the tournament was "Devil" Dave seven minutes into the second hour, who couldn't stop the bleeding of his lowly chipstack. Five minutes later we had our second elimination and we turn to "Slippery Pete" to call the action...

My first two cards are a K, 10 of unmatched suit. The flop comes K (club), 10 (club), K. I'm thinking holy crap I've flopped a full house - and a huge one at that. Several players stay in as I bet conservatively as to not give away my hand too soon. The turn card is the 9 (club). I'm still thinking my full house is gold so I raise the stakes. Again, a few people stay in and I'm drooling over the high pot. The river comes up Q (club). Although I realize that there's a high possibility for someone to have a straight draw, I know my full house will beat that so I go all in. In my excitement what I fail to realize is that there's four clubs in the potential straight in the community cards. In Trinity's hand sits the J (clubs) - a straight flush. At this point I still haven't realized the magnitude of her hand so I begin mocking her straight and reaching for the pot. My bubble bursts as the rest of the table brings it to my attention and my night as a dealer/spectator begins. Oh yeah and it was at that point we renamed Trinity to "The River".

With about three minutes left at the 5-10 blinds levels we had our next causality; "Quickfingers" kept getting dealt (and played) some not to great hands, and had problems bluffing his way into a few of the pots. His chipstack slowly depleted to nothingness.

The blinds increased to 10-15 and Though "Dead Money" Dustin left the table to help out visiting filmmaker, Steve Hutton, he returned on tilt and was eliminated 5 minutes into that round. Dustin was the only player eliminated during this blind level and the blinds increased to 15-30.

"Bow"Tye and our defending champ "The Corpse" with a string of bad luck were both eliminated on unlucky hands three minutes into the new blind level leaving 8 players in the game. One would get eliminated and the rest would be merged into the final table. As luck would have it two players were eliminated on opposite tables; "Nukular Fusion" on Table 1 and "The Knave of Hearts" on Table 2 as he lost to aggressive betting with a 10 high straight, only to be knocked out by "Brava" with a Jack high straight.

At this point, the second hour break was taken, chips were traded up to the 25 denomination and the remaining six players were placed around the final table. A chip count was taken given us our Final Six competitors, with "Dumb L(f)uck still our chip leader. "Easy"'s lead had been eaten away during the second hour, while "The River" proved why we named her that by stealing many a pot on the 5th card.

"Dumb L(f)uck" Adam S. : 1550
"The River" Erin M. : 1250
"Brava" Dave S. : 875
"Handsome" Rob C. : 825
"Easy" Amanda C. : 625
"Giggles" James H. : 350

After break the blinds raised to 25-50 and the final table begun! Two would leave empty handed and other four would place in the money.

His short chipstack didn't last long and "Giggles" was eliminated first at the 11 minute mark of this round. The other players remained in the game as the blinds raised to 50-75 and "Easy" was the final player out of reach of the money barely a minute into this round.

Hard fought battles were waged by the remaining "In the money" players and three minutes away from the next blinds increased, "Handsome" Rob Card busted out with his second straight money finish taking home fourth place and $20.

The blinds increased to 50-100 and the River appeared to be eating strongly into the chipstacks of both players. Sadly, the river dried up and Erin left the game at the very end of the third hour in 3rd place with $30 in winnings.

The remaining prize money ($150) was brought to the table and placed in front of our two remaining finalists: "Brava" and "Dumb L(f)uck"! A chip count was taken before we increased the blinds to 75-150 and our chip leader all evening, "Dumb L(f)uck" held a comfortable lead over "Brava"...

"Dumb L(f)uck" : 3675
"Brava" : 1600

The 10th blind level went by with little change in the players chip stacks, though it seemed that "Brava" was mounting a comeback. The blinds increased to 100-200, the chips were traded up and we turn it over to Adam to call the hand that changed the face of the game...

Final table, I was in the chip lead with over 3500 and it was just me and Dave. We played a few hands together and I noticed that there was a lot of tight betting. I figured if I got a good hand off the flop, it was the perfect time to be aggressive. I got dealt A8c and the flop came up 55A. Dave raised a bit, and I matched. The turn was a 10, and Dave checked to me. I raised all-in. We counted out Daves chips - around 1600 (I think) and pushed 2X into the middle. I turned over my cards to show the two pair, and Dave turned over his first card (king) and said "that's the one I want to show you" .... and then turned over the other Ace .... *gasp*. The only way I could save face was if the last Ace came up on the river - and even then, we would split the pot. It didn't and I was suddenly left with just over 500 chips. Looking back, I wouldn't change the way I played. I figured he had a 1/23 chance of having the Ace (2 remaining Aces / 46 unknown cards ) and he had 21 / 46 chance of having another card that was higher than my 8 (24 cards in the deck are bigger than the 8, minus the Ace in my hand, the A from the flop and the 10 from the turn / 46 unknown cards). So the odds that he had both was 1/23 * 21/46 ~ 2% and I was in a very good position the win, but my luck ran out, with Dave's phenomenal hand.

With only 500 chips in hand and the blinds increased to 100-200, "Dumb L(f)uck" survived a couple All-In hands but was eventually overrun by the powerful chip stack, giving Dave "Brava" Selberg, first place, the $100 prize pot and the title of "Bristol Street Classic III" champion! Adam took home second place with a $50 purse!

Congrats to our new reigning champion!
