Gavin Smith? Anyone played with him?

Just reading the June 28 Cardplayer and I notice someone named Gavin Smith from Guelph won a couple major tourneys, netted a ton and is 8th on their playerof the year ranking.

Anyone in the Guelph area ever played with him? Is he on this board?

I used to play with him in the old roving casino days in Ontario (1992-98 approx). He played 10-20 limit (the highest game they offered at the time). After these closed down we played 15-30 at a home game for a few years but then that broke up. He is a good aggressive player with a phenomenal reading ability. He also finished around 50th at the WSOP championship last year and has some smaller tourney wins. He has also placed in some of the big $10k events this year.

He actually played poker exclusively starting around 1998 (just a guess) and had some nice wins online and travelling to LA, foxwoods and vegas. I think he lives in vegas now.

well...i dont know..i red it too a months ago and that time i spend hours at the online poker.and guess what? at the turbo turnaments i met more than once a guy [or a girl..] that Gavin Smith was he's nick name..but i dont know whether it was him or not..i guess that "not" will be the answer..

I think the "real" Gavin goes by the name birdguts online.

I used to play hockey with Gavin in Guelph, played with him for 4 or 5 years. He used to play a ton at the charity casino's around town and then opened a club when the charity thing stopped. He's a funny guy, good card player but not much of a hockey player.

Gavin was a regular at Brantford for the first 18 months they had poker. He would play the 20-40, but many times he sat in my 10-20 game when waiting for a seat at the bigger table. He was clearly a very experienced player. Although he is from Ontario, some regulars on the big tourney circuit nicknamed him "Foxwoods" assumably because he would travel down to play the events in Connecticut, and thats where he first started making a name for himself in the bigger events. That was years ago now, today everybody knows his name .
