A Chop @ a WSOP Final Table (Why / Why Not???)

Just a random thought I had today - I have never heard of, or seen a chop @ a WSOP final table...is it illegal (well, you know what I mean) to Chop ?

Is that actually set out in the rules?

I'm asking because some reading I have come across suggests that when the $ gets big, chopping can be a good idea (I have to agree sometimes) to max your overall profit over time.

I know it would not be as "exciting" if people were chopping, but I was wondering if they could...

thanks.

  • I'd like to know too and will add a more general question on this topic.

Has anyone seen a deal at any casino run tourney final table?  I can't recall any.
(For example, it's of note when a chop doesn't happen on a Sunday @ PokerStars.)
  • When I played in a fairly major tournament in Regina, not only did we make a deal at the final table, but the tournament director provided a calculator. Then, as people busted out after that point, the payouts were adjusted to reflect our deal.

As for WSOP final table deals, here's what little I know: http://www.pokerforum.ca/forum/index.php?topic=4665.msg39437#msg39437
  • From what I know, many of the years, the WSOP has been chopped, but without telling the public.
Also, it was more common before all the internet players were on the final table and the pros would take their chances instead of splitting with no names.

I have about 15 of the WSOP episodes from 1979-2004 on my desktop, and on one of them, Chris Ferguson states that most of hte WSOP final tables are chopped, but they just dont tell the general public, because I guess it would take away from the excitement of the first place winner, etc.

I gotta check back to see in what year he states this, because again I don't see it happening with pros wanting to go at it with seemingly inexperienced internet players
  • Wow, so this is getting interesting. Looks like chops maybe do happen, but its really hush hush since it doesn't look good to the public.
Looking forward to hearing more about what Ferguson was saying on those old wsop vids.

thanks for the info so far guys. neat stuff.
  • Yup you got it, pretty hush hush from what Ferguson said

anytime i watch a tournament now i wonder about the situation. but again with internet players who are inexperienced, would u split money? depends on situation, chip count, etc i guess.

Im at work right now, but i will surely go cehck back to my WSOP videos and see what year Ferguson states this and his exact words, and then you can look it up.

But im pretty sure Moneymaker didnt chop with Farha, lol

but Farha wants to chop Moneymaker :D
    diff kind of chop :P
  • Ok so I went through my videos

and In the 2001 WSOP video where morteson wins, Chris Ferguson states that there have been "Deals striked" between the remaining players for many of the WSOP final tables. Even the Narrator of the program(since it used to be on the discovery channel) states how this "deal" is not made apparent to fans and is more of a secret. So now the question is answered, there are chops at the WSOP, and they have happened before, just dont know which exact years and if they will ever happen in this internet bingo age again.
  • You will find this interesting.

I am reading Harrington Vol 2. Saw a section at the end called "Making Deals"

Pg # 429 says (and this is Harrington speaking)

"In 1995 when I won the WSOP, I offered deals to all my opponents at the final table,
and they all walked away! (I thought the deals were fair but they all wanted the $1,000,000
    first prize.)"

So there you go - another solid example. I wonder if Moneymaker or Raymer made a deal - wonder if we would ever hear about it.

Well its good to know chopping goes on at those levels as I suspected it must.

Thanks for checking those vids out !
  • From Bluff magazine
Moneymaker-Sammy, lets make a deal, lets chop (moneymaker was up 6 million to 3 million)
Farha- Chris, i won't do that
    Moneymaker-Well, make me an offer
Farha- I don't want to embarrass you with my offer. Let's go and play"

    no chop.

    For real?

Looks like when you turn down a chop at the final table in the WSOP you end up a loser.
  • I'd chop my leg off to win, does that count?
